Day 1 Kota Kinabalu/Sandakan - Early morning flight to Sandakan. After check in and lunch at the hotel, proceed overland to Sukau (uneven road quality during parts of the journey) for three hours before taking a fascinating boat ride along the Menanggol River. Witness cheeky macaque
monkeys, amazing birdlife including hornbills, kingfishers and eagles, monitor lizards and the long nosed proboscis monkeys. A never to be forgotten experience of a lifetime. Overnight: Sabah Hotel Sandakan. (L)
For the more adventurous following the boat ride, why not stay in a cabin by the river. In the morning on day 2 you will visit the Gomantong Cave before continuing to the orang-utan sanctuary. Dinner is included along with a reduction of £35 per person. This is recommended due to the long drive back to the hotel after day 1.
Day 2 Sandakan/Kota Kinabalu - This morning visit the world-famous Sepilok orang-utan Sanctuary, where orphaned and captive orangutans are rehabilitated to return to the wild. Take a guided walk through the jungle to the feeding platform to hopefully catch a glimpse of these loveable creatures. In the afternoon take a short Sandakan tour followed by your flight back to Kota Kinabalu or a tour of Kota Kinabalu on arrival depending on flight schedules. (B)

This tour, by its sheer nature, will suit some and be impossible for others is not recommended to the less mobile. It is soft adventure and the terrain can be unpredictable. Comfortable shoes,
insect repellent and binoculars are strongly recommended. River cabin accommodation is basic with en suite hot shower/toilet. Minimum of two passengers.
