Weddings in Mauritius

A wedding in Mauritius is one which dreams are made. If you always imagined yourself hand in hand with your partner with tropical gardens and turquoise blue seas behind you, then Mauritius is probably the destination for you. The legal formalities are carried out in St Louis, but you can choose from any one of several beautiful hotels with a range of exotic locations surrounded by tropical flowers for the ceremony itself. You can be guaranteed a day to remember.

What's involved...

As with any marriage, there is some red tape, which must be completed prior to the ceremony, but you will be escorted throughout this process and it normally only takes around half a day. This is usually scheduled for the day before the ceremony. This means that on the day itself, you can concentrate on preparations and looking forward to a wonderful occasion. In theory, you can marry almost anywhere – as long as the Registrar is happy with the location. In practice, the hotel gardens are the most popular choice, although a Catholic ceremony in a church may also be an option.

You should arrive in Mauritius at least three days before your wedding day. As well as affording you the time to complete the legal procedures, it also gives you time to liase with the hotel wedding coordinator and finalise any arrangements. Generally, weddings take place on weekdays. We recommend that you marry in the afternoon (around 3.30 – 4.00pm), which means that the backdrop for your wedding (and the photos) could be a spectacular sunset.

Deposit and payment

The non-refundable deposit for a wedding and holiday package is £300 per person. The final balance is due 8 weeks prior to departure. Weddings and holidays are subject to the terms of the Essential Information and Booking Agreement in the current Premier Faraway brochure.

Minimum pre-book

Red tape, being what it is, the processing of documentation can take some time. We, therefore, require that weddings are booked a minimum of 8 weeks prior to departure date.

Minimum stay requirements

It is generally necessary to be in Mauritius for a minimum of three days before the wedding ceremony takes place.

Legal Formalities

Price: £215

It is necessary to comply with various legal requirements in order for a wedding to take place in Mauritius. Most of the paperwork is carried out prior to your arrival, but you will be required to be present to finalise the documentation once you arrive in Mauritius. This process will take approximately half a day and is usually scheduled for the day before the ceremony at the hotel.

On arrival in Mauritius, you will be met by our local representative from White Sands Tours. They will advise you of the appointment time and date. You will be collected from your hotel and taken to the White Sands Tours Head Office, where you will meet your wedding co-ordinator. You will need to ensure that you have all your original documents with you at this time.

You will be accompanied to the Civil Status Office before going to the Supreme Court to swear an affidavit. You will also have an appointment with a solicitor to talk you through the whole process.

You will be required to choose one of three matrimonial systems:

The above all relate to the way in which you would wish your personal goods and those acquired during your marriage to be disposed of in the event of a divorce or the death of either person. Whilst not something you want to think of at this time, it is a requirement in Mauritius and the various options will be explained to you prior to you reaching your decision.

Finally, you will be taken to the Civil Status Office in your hotel’s locality to publish the banns and agree the wedding time with the Civil Status Officer.

Original documents required

The documentation outlined below is required for a civil wedding in Mauritius. Copies of these documents must be forwarded to us a minimum of six weeks prior to your arrival in Mauritius so that we can pass them on to our local agents for processing. You will need to take the original documents with you.

For divorced women or widows, the marriage can only take place 300 days after the decree absolute has been issued or 300 days after the date of death. For wedding requests taking place within this timeframe, a medical certificate must be obtained and issued in Mauritius confirming that the bride is not pregnant. Additional charge: approximately £20.

Any relevant documentation, which is in any language other than English or French, must be officially translated and accompanied by the original.
