Weddings in Sri Lanka

A wedding in Sri Lanka is guaranteed to be special. The traditional Sri Lankan wedding is performed on a decorated, canopied dais (Poruwa). The bride and bridegroom are dressed in ceremonial Sri Lankan costumes. Jayamangala stanzas of blessings are sung by young girls, whilst dancing is performed to the beating of drums making the ceremony a colourful and unique experience.

Generally, weddings in Sri Lanka are civil ceremonies, although it is possible to arrange for a Catholic priest to preside at the service. Weddings can usually be arranged on any day with the exception of public holidays – be warned that Sri Lanka does have quite a few of these!!
