The facts:

Getting there: Sacramento is around 11/2 hours drive from San Francisco and Eureka about 5 hours drive from San Francisco. Sequoia National Park is about 4 hours drive and Lake Tahoe 31/2 hours from San Francisco. Mammoth Lakes is about 5 hours drive from either San Francisco or Los Angeles, while Death Valley is just over 4 hours drive from Los Angeles.

Best time to travel: California is a year round destination although the weather varies throughout the state. Much of California has a Mediterranean-like climate with warm, dry summers and mild wet winters. Further inland, summers are hot and dry, winters cool and wet. At higher altitudes, expect beautiful summers, snowy winters and striking colour in spring and autumn.
