Our travel expert Melissa Bradley headed out to Doha, the capital of Qatar, to discover what our newest destination has to offer. Check out her top tips.
What are the key highlights from your fam trip to Doha?
Seeing the Doha city skyline in the evenings. With all the buildings lit up and glowing brightly, it is truly breathtaking. The views are even more spectacular on a Dhow boat cruise along the city skyline.
What piece of advice would you give to agents to help them sell this destination?
Doha is a year round destination. During the UK’s winter months, the weather in Qatar is very pleasant, the sun shines during the day and it is very warm but not humid or uncomfortable.
All signs have English translation and you will always find something to eat. The destination is very safe and super clean. You will never find too many people in one place at any time, so it is not overwhelming.
From your experience, what top three items should a client not travel without when visiting Doha?
I’m very happy that I took lightweight clothing, especially as I was walking around outside all day. Take a pashmina - this will be useful if you go to any cultural places, as you need to cover up a little more. And don’t forget a camera - Doha is just too beautiful not to take photos
Which three must-do excursions/side trips do you recommend?
The Museum of Islamic arts: not only are the artefacts in the building unique but the actual building itself is a work of art. The skyline views you get from the museum are stunning and very picturesque.
Visit the Souq Waqif, a traditional Doha market, which is also home to the Falconry Hospital and houses the stables for the king’s horses. The markets sells everything from traditional clothing, jewellery and shoes to spices, ornaments and animals.
Add a desert excursion on to your itinerary. Popular desert excursions include camel riding, dune rides in a four-by-four and dune buggies for thrillseekers. There is also a luxury desert camp with beach cabanas.
What are your top tips for visiting the destination?
Do the hop-on-hop-off city bus tour - this will give you a great idea of places to visit. One of my favourite places on this tour is the Katara Cultural Village; you will see stunning sunsets in the evenings, and it has a brilliant amphitheatre that hosts many events.
Take a trip to the Pearl-Qatar: the artificial island features Mediterranean-style yacht-lined marinas, top brand boutiques and restaurants, and is the only place in Doha that non-residents can purchase a property.
