Food is often an important part of any holiday and the Isle of Man has an abundance of food choices. Seafood is popular with crab, lobster and scallops all widely available with the Queen Scallop (queenies) regarded as a particular delicacy. As part of your holiday experience you should try another local delicacy, Manx kippers (smoked herring), which are produced by the smokeries in Peel on the west coast of the island. These smokeries also produce other specialties including smoked salmon and bacon, a real must for any foodie.
It is not only the clear blue sea that means the local produce is of the highest standard, the beautiful countryside lends itself to producing some incredible dishes. Manx lamb from the hill farms is a popular dish and if you’re a fan of cheese then the Manx cheese is something you really must try during your stay. For those visitors with a sweet tooth, make sure you don’t miss out on creamy Manx ice cream, handmade confectionary and traditional cakes including the Manx Bonnag.
During your stay why not try a Manx real ale. Thanks to the Isle of Man's Pure Beer Act of 1874, brewers may only use water, malt, sugar and hops in their brew. Beer is brewed on a commercial scale by Okells Brewery, which was established in 1850 and is the island's largest brewer; and also by Bushy's Brewery and the Hooded Ram Brewery. You can also find locally produced mineral water and for those looking for a ‘drop of the hard stuff’ then the Manx Spirit will make for some fond memories.
Around the island you’ll find restaurants, bars, country inns and cafés all offering refreshments and cuisine whether you’re looking for a quick bite whilst on the move exploring or leisurely fine dining.
