Our suggested itinerary is a starting point
We're specialists in tailor-made holidays, where we can adapt each itinerary to suit your requirements
Day 1 Adelaide & South Australia
Board the legendary Ghan and, as the big wheels start turning, tuck into lunch and admire the rolling pastoral lands of South Australia passing by. Marvel as the spectacular Flinders Ranges disappear into the horizon while relaxing in your cabin or mingling with fellow travellers in the lounge car. As night falls, return to the restaurant for a chef-prepared gourmet meal showcasing regional flair and seasonal flavours paired with a selection of Australian wines, beers and non-alcoholic beverages.
Day 2 Marla
Rise early to step off the train and stretch your legs as the sunlight slowly bathes the surrounding outback as you enjoy a steaming mug of coffee with a bacon and egg roll. Take a moment to enjoy the stillness on this short stop before re-boarding the train for brunch as you travel onwards to Alice Springs, an iconic Red Centre town. It may be remote, but it offers plenty to explore being home to doctors who fly, rivers that run dry, and a cast of colourful characters.
The choice of Off Train Experiences include a Simpsons Gap Discovery Walk; a visit to Desert Park to learn about the region's wildlife; A Town Called Alice which explores some iconic sites; Cycle Alice (limited availability) or Standley Chasm Cultural Walk. Alternatively, upgrade your experience with a helicopter ride for spellbinding views of Simpson's Gap (at extra expense). Return to the train late afternoon where you have time to rest and refresh before dinner is served.
Day 3 Katherine
Your day dawns in the tropical north and after breakfast, it's time to discover Katherine's pristine wilderness, which is stirring and powerful. You'll have the chance to explore it from the water or land with your choice of Off Train Experiences. Perhaps take a Nitmiluk Gorge Cruise; a Nitmiluk Rock Art Cruise; visit Cutta Cutta Caves (Apr-Oct and limited availability); or Katherine Outback Experience (Apr-Oct).
Again, you also have the option to upgrade your activity (at extra expense) to a Nitmiluk Gorge helicopter flight which really allows you to appreciate the sheer enormity of the river. Return to the train where you can kick back and savour the last few hours of this epic journey before the train rolls into Darwin as evening falls.
