Fly to Cairns

On arrival collect your hire car and make your way to the hotel, where the remainder of the day is free to settle back and relax.

Be as active or as idle as you wish today. Numerous excursions can be booked taking you out to explore the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef or scenic landscapes of the lush rainforest (both at extra expense). Of course, you could simply opt to cool off at Cairns Lagoon, the promenade-front pool which is a favourite with the locals, or spend time at one of the nearby beaches.

Head north following the coast before bearing inland for Australia's largest rainforest, home to plant species that existed millions of years ago (69 miles).

There are numerous ways to explore this extraordinary wilderness. Perhaps take a cruise along the Daintree River to spot crocodiles and colourful birds, see where the rainforest meets the reef at Cape Tribulation or, join a guided walk for fascinating insight into this special environment (at extra expense). Daintree village itself is home to a variety of eateries, artist's studios and souvenir shops.

Return southwards and back to the coast as you head for Port Douglas, a tropical town which mixes a laidback lifestyle with exhilarating adventure.

Port Douglas is perfectly positioned to easily experience the Great Barrier Reef with multiple tours departing daily (at extra expense). For further natural wonders just 20 minutes drive away, discover Mossman Gorge for a spectacular taster of the region's flora and fauna. Within the town, you'll want to visit Macrossan Street for its one-of-a-kind boutiques, markets and galleries or, maybe while away an hour or so in the warm, calm waters of Four Mile Beach.

Drive south, following either a coastal route or one that takes you inland. Your destination, the Atherton Tablelands, welcomes you with scenic vistas at every turn (92 miles).

Get back to nature by following some of the walking tracks through the lush rainforest. The region is a natural playground of tropical forests, volcanic crater lakes and rivers rushing towards the coast to create a plethora of incredible waterfalls. Keep your eyes peeled for diverse wildlife including over 160 species of birds.

Meander back towards the coast as you head for Mission Beach, known for its unspoilt beaches, deserted islands and fringing rainforest (85 miles).

A day here gives you another opportunity to book a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef (at extra expense). If you've already ticked that off your list, the miles of sandy beaches are sure to tempt you. For those keen to stay on the go, why not follow one of the easy rainforest walks or, up the thrills with some white water rafting?

Travel back up the coast to Cairns, the final stop on this wonderful tour, which really has shown you the very best of the Tropical North Queensland region. This evening, perhaps try out one of the waterfront restaurants found at The Pier (86 miles).

If time allows, enjoy some shopping or relaxing poolside before you return your car to the airport where the tour concludes for your onward journey.
