Candidasa, a former fishing village on Bali’s east coast, offers a tranquil alternative to the island’s busier southern beaches, with volcanic sands and a relaxed seaside atmosphere. The town stretches along the bay, lined with hotels, guesthouses and restaurants, while a pretty lotus-filled lagoon forms its focal point. Offshore, the Gili islands offer excellent snorkelling and diving, although strong currents suit experienced divers. Nearby attractions include the atmospheric Goa Lawah Temple, magnificent Lempuyang Temple, Taman Ujung Water Palace and Tenganan Pegringsingan, one of Bali’s oldest villages. With its peaceful setting and rich cultural heritage, Candidasa is an appealing base for exploring eastern Bali.

Best time to go
While April to October is considered the best time, there is never a bad time to travel to Bali, as it’s generally warm throughout the year. Although more rain tends to fall from November to March, it’s usually a short, tropical downpour.
