While it's perfectly possible, and indeed highly recommended, to visit the desert for a few hours from your city or beach base it's far better to leave the bright lights behind and stay a night or two.Forget the gold you can buy in the souks, the real sparkle is amongst the undulating dunes of the desert. It's magical to rise early and watch as the sun's first rays hit this golden land. It's equally a sight to savour when it dips over the horizon and the night sky impresses with thousands of twinkling stars.Aside from simply absorbing the unique environment, there's no need to be completely idle.

Best time to go
Dubai enjoys virtually guaranteed year-round sunshine. Between December to February temperatures average in the mid-20sºC, rising up into the 30s from March to April and again from October to November. While the scorching temperatures between May-September may be too much for some (usually in excess of 40ºC), it’s one of the few destinations when it’s cheaper to visit during our school summer holidays, whether travelling with children or not.
