Officially Hawaii Island, it is often called ‘Big Island’ to distinguish it from the archipelago with which it shares its name. Nearly twice as big as all the other Hawaiian islands combined, its sprawling size is awe-inspiring. A must-see is the extraordinary Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, an International Biosphere Reserve and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, you’ll find Kilauea volcano, one of the most active volcanoes on earth, as well as 150 miles of hiking trails through volcanic craters, scalded deserts and rainforests. After the heat of the volcanoes, why not cool off at an enchanting waterfall.
Temperatures are pretty constant throughout the year and are always generally pleasant, but the rainfall does vary, with the east receiving far more rain than the west coast.
