Jabal Akhdar (‘green mountain’) forms part of Oman’s Hajar Mountains, rising 6,560 feet above sea level. Its dramatic landscape features rugged peaks, deep gorges, caves, canyons and terraced villages. With a Mediterranean-like climate, the region is famed for walnuts, pomegranates and fragrant damask roses, which bloom from March to May. Visitors can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, off-road drives, archery and mountain-top yoga. With little light pollution, it is also an exceptional destination for stargazing. Nearby attractions include Nizwa Fort, Jabreen Castle and UNESCO-listed Bahia Fort.
This region enjoys a refreshing year round climate and usually has lower temperatures than those of Muscat, particularly in winter. The cooler summer temperatures make it a great place to escape the soaring heat of the beach and desert regions.
