Part of the Inner Hebrides, the Isle of Islay is a must for whisky lovers. Its main village is Bowmore, home to one of the island’s best-known distilleries and its signature sweet and smoky whisky. Around the island there are many more distilleries to discover, from Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig on the south coast to Bunnahabhain, the island’s most remote, plus Bruichladdich, celebrated for its commitment to sustainability, and Ardnahoe, Islay’s newest distillery.
Beyond its whisky, Islay offers rugged coastal scenery and a rich history, with historical sites such as the ruins of Kildalton Church to explore.
With their northerly location, the best time to visit is between March and November, with the long days of summer a particularly appealing time.
Ferries sail to Islay from Kennacraig on the Kintyre peninsula.
