Day 1 Durban
Following a morning departure from Durban the train traverses the spectacular Valley of a Thousand Hills. After lunch in the dining car, disembark for a visit to the famous Ardmore Ceramics Gallery, where guests are encouraged to express their imagination based on nature and Zulu folklore and tradition. Return to the train for dinner as the train heads towards Ladysmith.
Day 2 Spionkop & Nambiti
Disembark after breakfast and travel by road to Spionkop Lodge for a choice of two excursions. Perhaps opt to hear the historic tale of the Battle of Spionkop or, venture out into the 11,000 acre reserve for a game drive. Return to the train for lunch and absorb the views of the Drakensberg Mountains, named by the Voortrekkers who thought the peaks reminded them of spines on a dragon's back.
This afternoon, look forward to a game drive in the Nambiti Reserve, a private Big Five bush retreat set on 20,000 acres of malaria-free bushveld with incredible biodiversity. This evening the train travels through decisive battle sites from the First Anglo Boer War.
Day 3 Johannesburg & Pretoria
Travel northwest across the goldfields of the Witwatersrand and the Highveld towards Balfour, a small mining town in Mpumalanga, and Heidelberg, site of the first Rand gold strike. Savour your last lunch on board before arriving in Pretoria mid-afternoon.
