Bagan 3 nights
Day 1 Bagan: On arrival at Bagan airport you will be met and your sightseeing begins. Bagan is a spectacular plain stretching away from the Ayeyarwaddy River, dotted with thousands of 800 year old temple ruins. Today’s sightseeing includes Shwezigon Paya, whose graceful bell shape became a prototype for virtually all later stupas over Myanmar; 13th century Gubyaukhyi Temple; AnanDa Pahto, one of the finest, largest, best preserved and most revered of the Bagan temples; Gubyaukgyi Temple at Myinkaba, famous for its well-preserved 12th century stuccoes; Manuha Temple; and Shwesandaw Paya, which has stairways leading up from the square bottom terraces to the round base of the stupa. Visit a lacquerware workshop before enjoying a panoramic view of the sun setting over the plain of Bagan from one of the pagoda platforms.
Day 2 Bagan: Travel to the jetty in Old Bagan to cross the river by boat and then continue by pick-up to Tant Kyi Taung, or Glass Monastery. Perched on a hilltop, this pagoda dates back to 1059 and is surrounded by 32 elephant statues facing all directions. As you stroll around the compound you have the chance to talk with the resident monks before exploring the river by boat.
Day 3 Bagan: During the journey from Bagan, stop in the small village of Shwe Hlaing for a Burmese-style tea party hosted by a local family in their home. Continue to Mount Popa, an extinct sheer-sided volcano that rises out of the plain. Topped by golden stupas, it is a famous pilgrimage site for locals who come to worship at the Nat temples. Lunch is taken at the Popa Mountain Resort, perched midway to the summit of this legendary mountain. En route back to Bagan explore local life in the unspoiled town of Salay. Visit the Yoke Son Kyaung, the oldest surviving wooden monastery, with beautiful carvings of court life and scenes from the Ramayana. Continue to wander around the town, visiting the market and the Thar Ta Na Yaung Chi monastery, which also serves as an orphanage.
Day 4 Bagan: Your tour concludes with a transfer back to Bagan airport.
