Day 1: Fly to Kuala Lumpur.
Day 2 Kuala Lumpur: Arrive in the Malaysian capital, a city boasting gleaming skyscrapers, colonial architecture and welcoming locals. You will be met and transferred to your hotel where you have time to relax, perhaps take a stroll and start exploring this multicultural haven.
Days 3-4 Kuala Lumpur: Two days at leisure to explore the many sights independently or by joining an excursion (extra charge). No visit to KL would be complete without visiting the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, which have an observation deck on level 86 and double-decker skybridge for breathtaking views. Other notable attractions include the Jamek Mosque, Merdeka Square, colourful Chinatown and the Railway Station.
Day 5 Kuala Lumpur/Kota Kinabalu: Transfer to the airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu on Sabah. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
Days 6-8 Sabah beach resort: Three full days to relax at this luxurious beach haven set amidst a nature reserve. Along with the spectacular beachfront, the resort is home to an eco-friendly golf course, a variety of thrilling watersports and a magnificent spa. Unique to the resort is the Nature Interpretation Centre, gateway to the nature reserve, where you can meet some of Borneo's wildlife, including several species of endangered animals in Sabah.
Day 9 Sabah beach resort/Kota Kinabalu/ Sandakan: Transfer to Kota Kinabalu for an early morning flight and then proceed for 30 minutes to the Sepilok Orang-Utan Sanctuary. Take a guided walk through the jungle to the feeding platform to hopefully catch a glimpse of these lovable creatures. Travel by road to the Lower Kinabatangan River Sanctuary, before cruising up river to Sukau village in search of the Proboscis monkeys, birds and wildlife. From January 2019 the boat transfer is to Borneo Nature Lodge where you enjoy lunch before viewing wildlife and birds in the rainforest.
Day 10 Sandakan/Kota Kinabalu/Sabah beach resort: After breakfast visit the Gomantong Cave, famed for its edible birds nests. Later, during a city tour of Sandakan visit the Water Village to see native stilt houses and also the Central Market. From January 2019, enjoy lunch after Gomantong Cave and then fly back to Kota Kinabalu for your onward transfer to the beach resort.
Days 11-13 Sabah beach resort: Should you tire of lazing under a swaying palm, the resort is just 10 minutes from Kota Kinabalu city, or optional excursions to nearby Poring Hot Springs or Kinabalu National Park are available (extra cost).
Day 14 Sabah beach resort/Kota Kinabalu/KL: Transfer to Kota Kinabalu for the return flight to KL for your onward journey.
Departures: Daily and operates for a minimum of two passengers.
Accommodation: Swiss Garden KL; Shangri-La's Rasa Ria for the first four nights and Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru at the end of the itinerary (Sabah beach); Borneo Nature Lodge Sandakan (or similar). The river cabins at Sandakan are basic with an en suite shower/toilet.
Meals: Room only. Lunch and dinner included on day 9. Breakfast and lunch included on day 10.
Tour price: The price shown is based on the best value travel dates in low season and includes return international flights from the UK, private transfers, 12 nights accommodation and sightseeing as outlined.
The visit to Sandakan will suit some and be impossible for others and is not recommended to the less mobile. It is soft adventure and the terrain can be unpredictable. Comfortable shoes, insect repellent and binoculars are strongly recommended.
