Day 1: Fly to Beijing.

Day 2 Beijing: Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. After settling in, why not step out for a stroll to explore the surrounding area.

Day 3 Beijing: This morning visit the Temple of Heaven, where the Ming and Qing emperors worshipped, and where you can witness Tai Chi being practised in the courtyard. Continue to the biggest square in the world, Tiananmen Square, for a stroll and a trip to the Forbidden City, which served as the grand imperial palace for centuries. Your final stop of the day will be at the Hutongs for a personal insight into the everyday life of traditional Beijing citizens.

Day 4 Beijing: Start with a memorable visit to the Great Wall at Mutianyu, one of the best-preserved sections of the wall, with accessible watchtowers and a less crowded atmosphere. Return to Beijing and stop for photographs at the Bird’s Nest Stadium and Water Cube, two of the memorable venues of the 2008 Olympic Games. This evening, feast on a sumptuous Peking Duck dinner, a traditional delicacy and a culinary must in Beijing!

Day 5 Beijing/Xi’an: This morning visit the Summer Palace, a magnificent complex of lakes, gardens, palaces and wonderful vistas. Afterwards enjoy a relaxing boat ride on beautiful Kunming Lake before catching the bullet train to Xi’an (approximately 5½ hours).

Day 6 Xi’an: Today, visit the Terracotta Warriors, an enthralling collection of 10,000 life size statues of the Chinese military, dating back over 2,000 years. This afternoon, visit Xian’s ancient city wall, the most complete city wall in China, which is best explored on foot or by bike. This evening, enjoy an entertaining Tang Dynasty Show, a colourful performance of traditional music and dance, accompanied by a delicious selection of tasty dumplings.

Day 7 Xi’an/Guilin: See more than 250,000 artefacts at the Shaanxi Museum, including treasures from many periods of China’s history. Next stop is the Small Wild Goose Pagoda which is followed by a visit to the Muslim Quarter for a glimpse of local life. Finally, you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Guilin.

Day 8 Guilin/Yangshuo: Transfer to Zhujiang quay for a four hour cruise on the breathtaking Li River towards Yangshuo. Enjoy the tranquil rural scenes of buffalo farming on the rice terraces and the towering limestone peaks. Arrive Yangshuo early afternoon and relax before you have the option to watch the “Impressions of Liu Sanjie” show, staged on the river (additional expense).

Day 9 Yangshuo/Guilin: At leisure this morning to explore independently, or perhaps join an optional cookery class (additional expense) or take a gentle stroll or cycle ride along the Yulong River. Return to Guilin and visit the Reed Flute Caves, a collection of colourfully illuminated stalactites and stalagmites. This evening, you have the option of watching a cormorant fishing show (additional expense and subject to availability).

Day 10 Guilin/Chengdu: Morning flight to Chengdu. On arrival you are free to explore independently. Perhaps explore the old town, or relax in the People’s Park where you may see locals playing mahjong or practising Tai Chi.

Day 11 Chengdu: The first stop today is the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Centre, where natural habitats have been created to provide the best possible environment for rearing and breeding pandas. In the afternoon there is a city tour during which you’ll visit Jinli Street and Kuanzhai Lane, for an insight to local life.

Day 12 Chengdu: Transfer to the airport for your onward journey.

Departures: Tour departs on fixed dates and is operated by Links Travel & Tours.

Accommodation: 4* hotels throughout the tour.

Meals: All meals (excluding beverages) except days 5, 7 & 10 when dinner is not included and days 9 & 10 when lunch is not included.

Group size: Links Travel & Tours offer small group tours (guaranteed departures) up to a maximum of 20 people. Tour still departs even if only two passengers are travelling.

Tour prices: The prices shown are based on the best value travel dates in low season and include return international flights from the UK, onward internal flights, bullet train travel, transfers and sightseeing by coach, services of an English speaking guide, entrance fees and accommodation. Private tours and upgraded accommodation available at a supplement.

Guides & tipping: Groups of 10 people or more will be provided with the services of a Tour Manager who will accompany the tour throughout in combination with local city guides. For your convenience, a compulsory amount to cover tips for guides, drivers and porterage will be collected from you by your guide at the start of the tour (generally around GBP4 per person per day).
