Day 7 At sea: Experience the world’s natural wonders through the innovative BBC Earth Experiences.
Day 8 Naha, Japan: Whilst much of the city was destroyed during WWII, a few restored remains provide historic interest, including Shuri Castle and its extraordinary gardens, the Royal Mausoleum and the Shurei Gate. Contemporary hotspots include Kokusai Street’s array of shops, cafés and restaurants.
Day 9 Ishigaki Island, Japan: While the white sand beaches and crystal waters are a big part of the island’s allure, scenic sights include the Tamatorizaki Observatory. On nearby Iriomote Island you’ll discover Japan’s largest mangrove area which offers habitat for a variety of plants and creatures.
Day 10 Hualien, Taiwan: A large city known for its spectacular scenery. The big waves are ideal for surfing, there are numerous biking trails, Tao and Buddhist temples and shrines, plus a rich aboriginal culture. If time allows, visit a market to taste local specialities like coffin bread!
Day 11 Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan: Long a small outpost of the Chinese empire, Taipei was occupied by the Japanese from 1895-1945 before it was handed over to the Republic of China. In the decades since, it has seen an explosion of growth, but traditional temples and worldclass museums still sit amid the skyscrapers.
Day 12 At sea: Perhaps drop by the Digital Workshop and learn new technical skills.
Day 13 Jeju City, South Korea: This volcanic island is blessed with beautiful beaches, breathtaking waterfalls and the world’s largest lava tubes. It also shares the mild subtropical climate of Hawaii and offers a similar broad range of activities whether in the warm ocean water or exploring the island’s interior on well-marked trails.
Day 14 Fukuoka (Hakata), Japan: This contemporary city has a lively atmosphere, an array of impressive architecture and several cultural attractions and museums. Modern developments like Canal City lend a futuristic air, as does the striking Fukuoka Tower, which has an observation deck. On the historical side, sites like the Kushida Shrine and the ruins of Fukuoka Castle provide traditional insights.
Day 15 Hiroshima, Japan: Famous as the site of the explosion of the world’s first atomic bomb, this cataclysm is sensitively documented at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and associated Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. The city, however, offers visitors a great deal more than a tragic past, with shrines and temples as well as a reconstructed castle, the historic Shukkei-en Garden and Miyajima Island, one of Japan’s most scenic spots.
Day 16 At sea: Enjoy cooking shows and hands-on workshops in partnership with America’s Test Kitchen.
Day 17 Tokyo, Japan: After disembarking this morning, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day to explore independently.
