Mandalay to Bagan Ancient Capitals 3 nights
Day 1 Mandalay/Sagaing & Ava: Morning embarkation and departure for Sagaing, one of Myanmar's ancient capitals. After lunch enjoy time to relax before you discover the highlights of Sagaing and the former royal capital of Ava. Explore the area by horse-drawn carriage and see a variety of ancient monasteries, including Bagaya Kyaung, which dates to 1834. You'll also see Maha Aung Mye Bonzan Monastery or the Nanmiyint watch tower before enjoying a picnic tea in the peaceful countryside of Ava. Return to the ship for cocktails and dinner.
Day 2 Ava/Yanderbo: Early risers can participate in a yoga session on the sun deck prior to breakfast. Afterwards, hear a lecture about Bagan's history and savour the passing scenery or, perhaps treat yourself to a treatment at the spa. After lunch, the ship arrives at the quiet riverside village of Yanderbo, a fascinating place where in 1826 the King of Ava signed a treaty signalling the end of the First Anglo-Burmese War. Nowadays, the village is known for its water pots, reputed to keep water cooler than those produced elsewhere in the country. Explore on foot and enjoy the chance to mingle with the friendly villagers. Return to the ship for afternoon tea and later, after dinner, you can head to the sun deck for the open-air cinema under the stars (weather permitting).
Day 3 Paokku/Bagan: Feast on a leisurely breakfast as the ship sails south before arriving in Pakkoku, an old trading town on the western bank of the Ayeyarwady. Your tour will visit some of the small industries in the area, such as a cheroot-rolling factory and a producer of 'Burmese slippers' (flip-flops). You'll also visit the thriving market and then tour the Shwegu Temple which features intricate carvings made from rare Yamanei wood and houses a unique Buddha image. Return to the ship for lunch and travel onwards to Bagan, where this afternoon you'll disembark and explore some of the most remarkable temples, stupas and pagodas in the area. Return to the ship for your farewell dinner and traditional dance performance.
Day 4 Bagan: Before breakfast, you have the chance to join an unforgettable sunrise balloon flight over Bagan (additional cost and pre-booking required). Disembark and transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
