Day 1 Bangkok: Evening departure from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station. Perhaps make your way to the teakwood Observation Car to enjoy spectacular open views of the sun setting before taking your seat in the sumptuous restaurant car for dinner.
Day 2 River Kwai: Disembark at the River Kwai station and set off on your chosen excursion. Options include a classic tour with a cruise along the river and visit to the Bridge over the River Kwai and Thai-Burma Railway Museum; an hour long cycle tour taking you through verdant rice paddies and stopping at a local farm; or alternatively, enjoy a culinary tour exploring the wet market, a rice noodle house and combine a raft cruise with a cooking class. Return to the train for lunch and a leisurely afternoon to recharge your batteries as the train travels onwards.
Day 3 Malaysia: Spend the morning watching the changing scenery as limestone massifs rear up dramatically from the rice fields. After lnch you will arrive in Kuala Kangsar, where you may choose to visit a traditional village where you can immerse yourself in rural Malaysian life and enjoy a walk through the rice paddies to learn about the process.
Alternatively, embark on a hill trek and learn about the local area as you go. Your reward at the top is panoramic views over the village and surrounding rice paddies. Peer through the binoculars provided and you may even catch a glimpses of the train waiting at nearby Padang Rengas station. Rejoin the train as it continues south through the lush rainforests and rural west coast towns of Peninsular Malaysia. Day 4 Singapore: While you enjoy breakfast watch the passing scenery of rubber and palm trees lining the track as well as the distant hills. All too soon the train crosses the Straits of Johor and arrives into Singapore. After disembarking you will be transferred by road to your hotel.
Fully air-conditioned and lavishly refurbished with wooden marquetry panelling and French furnishings, the train is, in total, a quarter mile in length. There are 10 sleeping cars, two restaurant cars, bar car, saloon car and an observation/bar car at the end of the train.
Pullman cabins have picture windows, day seating converting to upper and lower berths, a wardrobe, in-room safe, dropleaf table, en suite bathroom with shower, and the personal service of a cabin steward who is available around the clock. State and Presidential cabins are larger and feature lower berths (no double beds).
