Elephant Hills Rainforest Nature Safari
Duration: 3 nights wildlife experience tour
Price from: £599pp
Established as a national park in 1980, Khao Sok National Park stretches for 250 square miles and is one of Asia's premier natural wonders. While much of the park is carpeted in verdant rainforest, it's also comprised of vast limestone mountains that dominate the view at every turn, deep valleys, tumbling waterfalls and breathtakingly beautiful lakes. The park is filled with an incredible array of wildlife such as wild elephant, monkeys, gibbons, bears, porcupine and deer; many of which are quite elusive. Reptiles and insects are in abundance along with several species of bird, including the hornbill, and rare flora including the world's largest flower Rafelesia.
Each tour includes buffet meals during which you get to share the day’s adventures with fellow guests. Evening activities at the Elephant Camp also include cookery demonstrations and dance performances from local schools.
With animal welfare and conservation at the heart of what they do, Elephant Hills has received numerous awards and accolades from worldwide associations such as Global Spirit and National Geographic.
4 day Itinerary
Day 1 Phuket/Khao Sok: Early morning transfer. On arrival, enjoy a delicious buffet lunch before a relaxing canoe trip down the Sok River during which you can admire the rainforest and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. Afterwards, head to the elephant park to learn about the elephant conservation project and have the chance to prepare and feed the elephants one of their daily meals, then watch them bathe before you scrub and wash them clean. Return to camp for dinner.
Day 2 Khao Sok: Morning transfer to the west coast to board a speedboat and explore the mysterious maze of channels in the mangrove forest. Cruise through the channels to meet and board a classical Burmese junk, where lunch will be served, but not before you explore the nearby mangrove creek in a self-paddle canoe. En route back to camp there is a stop at a local market.
Day 3 Khao Sok/Cheow Larn Lake: Today you will explore Cheow Larn Lake by local longtail boat. This little-known, man-made lake is surrounded by limestone mountains and cliffs that rise up from the lake shore and is likened to Guilin in China or Halong Bay in Vietnam. After lunch at the Rainforest Camp there's time to swim in the lake before returning to the Elephant Camp.
Day 4 Khao Sok/Khao Lak: This morning take a guided hike through the jungle. It's an excellent opportunity to explore the ecology of one of the world's oldest rainforests, to see a great variety of exotic plants, trees, and ferns as well as watching out for wildlife. Weather dependent lunch will be served in the rainforest. Return to the Jungle Camp at around midday and then leave for your next hotel or the airport.
Departures: Daily from Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi, Surat Thani or Koh Samui.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner - all buffet style offering both Thai and western cuisine. Specific dietary requirements can be catered for.
Tour price: The prices shown for these escorted tours are based on the best value travel dates in low season and include return shared transfers from Phuket or Khao Lak hotels or Phuket airport (must be on flight arriving before 9am), accommodation and activities as outlined in each itinerary.
Note: Not recommended for the less mobile. The jungle trek at the Rainforest Camp will suit some and be more difficult for others as the terrain can be unpredictable.
The order of activities can change depending on the day, transfer times and the weather.
Children from 4 years old are permitted at Elephant Hills Elephant Camp and from 7 years at Rainforest Camp.
