East Coast Tasmania

Duration: 5 nights self-drive tour

Price from: £469pp

Hobart 1 night
Freycinet 2 nights
St Helens 1 night
Launceston 1 night

Day 1 Hobart: Arrive Hobart and collect your hire car. Straddling the Derwent River, this compact city sits at the foot of Mount Wellington’s forested slopes and combines 19th century heritage, charm and a modern lifestyle in an exceptional setting. Don’t miss Salamanca Place, Constitution Dock, Battery Point and the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). For a very special experience, visit Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum to learn about the Antarctic Explorer and we also recommend taking the short drive to the summit of Mount Wellington for fantastic views of the city.

Day 2 Hobart/Freycinet National Park: Leave Hobart this morning along the highway to the historical area of Port Arthur, once home to thousands of convicts in the 19th century and now a significant heritage area and open-air museum. Later this afternoon, travel onwards to stunning Freycinet National Park taking in the spectacular views of iconic Wineglass Bay, a perfectly curving beach with pristine waters (Hobart to Port Arthur approx 1½hours, Port Arthur to Freycinet approx 2 hours).

Day 3 Freycinet National Park: Day at leisure to explore the national park, which looks out to the Tasman Sea and is loaded with natural assets, including the pink granite peaks of the Hazards Range. Take a tour of an oyster farm, visit a winery, go to one of the islands or take a stroll along the famous Wineglass Bay.

Day 4 Freycinet National Park/St Helens: Drive up the coast to St Helens to explore the beautiful coast and clear turquoise waters of the Bay of Fire. Its name refers to the Aboriginal fires spotted by Captain Tobias Furneaux when he sailed past in 1773, but could also apply to the brilliant orange lichen that grows on the granite boulders lining the bay (approx 1½ hours).

Day 5 St Helens/Launceston: Take a leisurely morning drive to Launceston via the north east touring trail to the Tamar Valley to visit some of the many vineyards en route (approx 2 hours).

Day 6 Launceston: This morning drop your hire car off, either downtown or at the airport.  Alternatively extend your stay to explore the city of Launceston, cruise on the Tamar River or enjoy a walking trail taking in the history of the city.

Departures: Daily.

Accommodation: 3* Ibis Styles, Hobart; 3* Freycinet Lodge; 3* Tidal Waters Resort, St Helens; 4* Mantra Charles, Launceston.

Meals: Room only.

Tour price: The price shown is based on the best value travel dates in low season and includes 6 days group B car hire and accommodation as stated.

If time allows why not combine with the West Coast Tasmania tour for a longer itinerary. This can also be done by motorhome instead of car. Please ask for details
