You’ll see Battery Point, Salamanca Place, the Botanic Gardens, Constitution Dock and Mount Nelson for amazing city views. Tonight, enjoy a welcome dinner to meet your Travel Director and fellow travellers.
Day 3 Hobart/Strahan: Head west to New Norfolk and the magnificent Mt Field National Park for a walk through lush rainforest to the three-tiered cascade of picturesque Russell Falls. Then enjoy the scenic drive to Lake St Clair, the deepest freshwater lake in Australia, and continue through the rainforest to the coastal town of Strahan. Nestled on the shores of massive Macquarie Harbour, Strahan is the gateway to the World Heritage listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.
Day 4 Strahan/Cradle Mountain: A highlight today is your lunch cruise on the Gordon River. You’ll be awestruck by the beauty of the dark waters. Stained amber by buttongrass tannins, they reflect the untouched wilderness that surrounds them. Stop at Sarah Island for an insight into a relic of Tasmania’s lesser-known convict history. See Hell’s Gates, the treacherous entrance to the harbour, and Heritage Landing, site of a 2,000 year old Huon Pine. Pass through the towns of Rosebery and Tullah en route to sensational Cradle Mountain National Park.
Day 5 Cradle Mountain/Smithton: Travel to gorgeous Dove Lake for inspiring views of Cradle Mountain, definitely a scenic highlight! Keep your eyes peeled for Bennetts wallabies, echidnas and pademelons grazing through the alpine heathlands. Then, make your way past Table Cape for impressive views of Bass Strait and coastline. Picturesque Stanley is in your sights as you head west with views of the sheer sided Stanley Bluff, known as The Nut, and a chance to explore. Continue to Smithton.
Day 6 Smithton/Launceston: Travel along the picturesque north west coastline passing through the seaside towns of Burnie and Penguin before reaching Sheffield, at the base of Mount Roland, for lunch. En route to Launceston, visit the Ashgrove Cheese Factory to learn all about cheese making and taste some samples.
Day 7 Launceston: This morning you’ll visit Launceston’s spectacular Cataract Gorge which boasts the longest single-span chairlift in the world! This will be followed by a short tour of Launceston, one of Australia’s oldest cities. The afternoon is at leisure, perhaps try a river cruise on the Tamar, visit the Art Gallery or the historic Tramway Museum (all additional expense).
Day 8 Launceston/Bicheno: First stop is Bridestowe Lavender Estate, where you can try some of the products and treat yourself to a lavender ice cream. Later make a stop at the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, planted in honour of fallen WWI soldiers. Continue your journey along the east coast to Bicheno. This evening optional tours are available to see Bicheno’s wild penguin colony as they emerge from the ocean for the night, or to see the iconic Tasmanian Devils (both additional expense).
Day 9 Bicheno/Hobart: Get your camera ready for breathtaking Freycinet National Park. A guided walk will unveil astonishing views across brilliant blue water, verdant forest and golden beaches. Cape Tourville Lookout in particular is simply magic! Later, travel through Swansea and Orford, en route to Hobart.
Day 10 Hobart/Port Arthur/Hobart: Explore the Port Arthur Historic Site, taking a cruise around the Isle of the Dead and then a fascinating guided walk through the remains of Port Arthur’s infamous convict prison. On the drive back to Hobart, see the amazing natural rock formations of the Tasman Arch, the Devil’s Kitchen and the Blowhole. This evening join your fellow travellers for a farewell dinner at one of Hobart’s popular restaurants.
