See the mixture of architectural styles and cultural influences including old Government House and the new Northern Territory Parliament building. This evening, get to know your Travel Director and fellow travellers over dinner.
Day 3 Darwin/Katherine: Travel south along the Stuart Highway stopping at Adelaide River’s poignant War Cemetery. This afternoon, continue via Katherine to Nitmiluk National Park for a tranquil cruise along Katherine Gorge. Feel the spirituality of the land, marvel at the gorges, spot wildlife and learn about the history and culture of the traditional owners, the Jawoyn people. Later, meet Tom Curtain during his entertaining show at the Katherine Outback Experience.
Day 4 Katherine/Kununurra: Watch the landscape transform dramatically as you journey across vast Aboriginal homelands. Pause at the historic Durack Homestead Museum and later, cruise along the Ord River which supports an abundance of fish, birds and marsupials. Experience a magical sunset on the water before you arrive in Kununurra.
Day 5 Kununurra: Perhaps take an optional early morning scenic flight over the spectacular Bungle Bungle beehive domes before a tour of Kununurra, or you may like to forgo your tour of Kununurra for a full day, in depth 4WD tour of the Bungle Bungle. Kununurra is the hub of local industry in the East Kimberley and during today’s tour of the town you’ll visit Mirima National Park. Afterwards, take in the views from Kelly’s Knob Lookout before an afternoon at leisure. This evening, you’re invited to a privately hosted dinner at the Kununurra Sandalwood Factory, with a menu from fresh locally-grown produce.
Day 6 Kununurra/El Questro: Begin with a guided tour of an Ord River rum distillery before travelling on to Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve (weather permitting) to see birdlife and maybe even a lurking crocodile. Continue to the Gibb River Road and the El Questro Wilderness Park. Staying in safari style tented cabins, you really feel like you’re immersed in nature. It’s just magic!
Day 7 El Questro: After waking to the calls of native birds, travel across the Pentecost River for a cruise on Chamberlain Gorge, an extensive waterhole fringed by tropical vegetation and soaring escarpments. This afternoon is free to relax and enjoy your surrounds or, if you’re up for it, join your Travel Director for a challenging hike to Emma Gorge where you can take a dip in the crystal-clear waterhole.
Day 8 El Questro/Halls Creek: Visit the Argyle Diamond Mine where a local indigenous guide will join you for an extensive behind the scenes look. Continue south to the historic town of Halls Creek, situated on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert, at the doorstep of the World Heritage listed Purnululu National Park.
Day 9 Halls Creek/Fitzroy Crossing: Travel through the Kimberley to the remote township of Fitzroy Crossing stopping at the indigenous Mangkaja Art Gallery. This afternoon, cruise with a local guide through Geikie Gorge, watching for freshwater crocodiles, fruit-bats and wallabies as the walls of the gorge tower above you.
Day 10 Fitzroy Crossing/Broome: Travel to the tropical resort town of Broome on the Indian Ocean. On arrival, enjoy a Broome city sights tour with your Travel Director, before sitting back and relaxing with a drink to watch the spectacular sunset over the ocean.
Day 11 Broome: Today you have a full day to explore this tropical hideaway. Allow time for a leisurely stroll along the vast expanse of pristine sand and swim in the turquoise water that is Cable Beach; wander through Chinatown or shop for pearls. This evening join your travelling companions for dinner to celebrate your wonderful trip across the Kimberley.
