Day 1 Adelaide/Marla: Step aboard the legendary Ghan at noon and as the big wheels start turning enjoy lunch and watch the rolling pastoral lands of South Australia pass by. Marvel as the spectacular Flinders Ranges disappear into the horizon while relaxing in your cabin or mingling with fellow travellers in the Lounge car. As night falls, return to the restaurant for a regionally-inspired dinner with all inclusive fine wines and beverages.
Day 2 Marla/Katherine: Begin with a freshly brewed coffee or juice as the day dawns at Marla, an outback outpost in the remote reaches of South Australia. It is here, deep inland, that you will enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience, as you watch the desert come to life at sunrise. It’s then all aboard for brunch as the train travels through the MacDonnell Ranges to Alice Springs, an iconic Red Centre town. It may be remote, but there’s plenty to explore with your choice of off-train excursions which include visiting its iconic sites or taking a front row seat at a spectacular bird show at the Desert Park. To fully appreciate this breathtaking part of Australia, you may like to take a helicopter ride for amazing views of Simpson’s Gap; a serene camel ride or, perhaps take in the wonders of Central Australia from a 90 minute scenic flight (all additional expense).
Day 3 Katherine/Darwin: After breakfast, it’s time to discover Katherine’s pristine wilderness, which is stirring and powerful. You’ll have the chance to explore it from the water or land with your choice of off-train experiences. Cruise the jaw-dropping Nitmiluk Gorge, learn more about its ancient Indigenous rock paintings and gain insight into the culture of the traditional owners, the Jawoyn people, or discover authentic outback life on a cattle station. Optional upgrades include a helicopter flight over Nitmiluk Gorge or a scenic flight over Kakadu and Nitmiluk (both additional expense). Return to the train where you can kick back and savour the last few hours of this epic journey before the train rolls into Darwin as evening falls.
This journey is also available in reverse.
