Rotorua 2 nights
Day 1 Auckland/Rotorua: Collect your car in Auckland and drive to Hamilton, New Zealand's largest inland city, on the banks of the Waikato River. Perhaps take a stroll round Hamilton Gardens or visit Hamilton Zoo, home to over 600 native New Zealand and exotic mammals, birds and reptiles. Continue to Rotorua where hissing steam rises from cracks, gardens, pathways and even residential streets, while a faint sulphur scent lingers in the air (approx 3½ hours).
Day 2 Rotorua: At leisure to explore this extraordinary town. An ideal place to start is the Rotorua Museum to learn of the region's rich Maori culture, volatile landscape and dramatic history. Perhaps visit Whakarewarewa, The Living Thermal Village which is set amidst a landscape of erupting geysers, hot thermal springs and bubbling mud pools. Later, if you wish, relax in one of the thermal spas, maybe hire a bike and explore one of the mountain trails or, if that's too tame you'll find thrills and adventure activities galore. You'll find lots of dining options available, but as Rotorua is the heartland of Maori culture, we highly recommend a traditional Maori concert and hangi (meal).
Day 3 Rotorua/Auckland: On your way back to Auckland, we suggest you stop off and visit the Waitomo Caves, best known for the glowworm cave. Board a boat to travel through the cave in silence as you see stalagmites and stalactites and the tiny lights above you are thousands of glowworms radiating their unmistakable luminescent light. Return to Auckland where your tour concludes (approx 3½ hours).
Accommodation: 3* Plus Sudima Rotorua.
Meals: Room only.
Tour price: The price shown is based on the best value travel dates in low season and includes 3 days group C compact car hire and accommodation as stated.
