Reunion Island Holidays

This tiny dot of volcanic land in the Indian Ocean packs a punch with its majestic landscapes, stunning beaches, extensive hiking trails, vast tracts of national park and a truly unique blend of cultures.

An overseas department of France, the petite island of Réunion juts out of the Indian Ocean between Mauritius and Madagascar but is quite unlike its neighbours with breathtaking volcanic landscapes which may lead you to think you've landed in Hawaii.

From volcanic black to coral white sands, the island boasts a number of superb beaches, particularly on the west coast around Saint-Gilles but also on the south coast. Both coastlines' turquoise waters are protected by an 18 mile long coral reef with exceptionally clear lagoons, perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The waters contain an abundance of multi-coloured fish and corals, or take a trip further out to sea and you may encounter dolphins (year round) and whales (June to October) which also flock to the island.

However, a holiday on Réunion needn't be confined to the beach, as it's a dream destination for lovers of the great outdoors.

The island's volcanic peaks, craters and ramparts are all included in UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites and the island is criss-crossed by over 600 miles of hiking trails. Options range from simple forest paths to more challenging mountain trails up the formidable Piton de la Fournaise, one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes.

The extraordinarily diverse terrain also includes a wonderland of waterfalls, verdant emerald forests and three cirques, or natural amphitheatres, which were former craters of long-dormant volcanoes. To fully appreciate the island's splendour a helicopter ride is highly recommended.

If time allows visit the capital Saint-Denis, home to a significant number of local museums, monuments, markets as well as trendy shops, bistros and boulangeries. Island cuisine is another reason to visit, with beach restaurants serving the catch of the day or mouth-watering Creole specialities.
