California Wine Country Holidays

With elegant estates nestled at the end of country roads lined with vineyards, low-key wineries housed in converted barns and urban wine trails with hip tasting rooms, California's wine country is as varied as the state itself. .

Boasting more than 400 wineries, the Napa Valley reigns as the land of grand estates, expansive tasting rooms, quaint towns and elegant hotels, many of which edge up to the celebrated Silverado Trail. This two-lane country road is bordered by shady oaks and dotted with world-class vineyards, awaiting exploration by car or, if you prefer, why not hire a bike and stop for a picnic along the way. Another fantastic way to see the sights, as well as stop and sip, is to hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train, which chugs between vineyards and tasting rooms along a 25 mile track. Alternatively, get an early morning view from overhead aboard a hot air balloon before touching down for breakfast.

Wine country is not just for wine connoisseurs, it's a perfect region for those seeking a relaxing escape and the chance to enjoy the finer things in life. There are superb art galleries, entertainment venues, inviting spas, the fascinating Oxbow Public Market in Napa and numerous scrumptious dining establishments all to be enjoyed.

Along with the bustling town of Napa, other towns to explore within the region include Yountville, where cuisine takes centre stage; the picture-perfect town of St Helena, which brims with little shops, art galleries and cafes; and laid-back Calistoga located at the northern tip of Napa Valley.

Best time to go

Each season has its charms but generally the weather is mild and wineries are open year round. If you want to experience the excitement of harvest visit between late August and October; head there in the autumn (September-November) and watch the dramatic colour change of the countryside; January to March is the quietest time, so perfect if you seek a leisurely experience, although the weather can be more variable with rain likely. Spring and summer are popular times to visit, with festivals and events aplenty, particularly during summer.
