San Diego Holidays

With near perfect weather year-round, a spectacular coastline, world-class attractions, diverse neighbourhoods and a sophisticated dining and nightlife scene, San Diego has been dubbed California's beach city.

San Diego's beaches are a must-visit. From secluded coves perfect for swimming to scenic shores prized for surfing, every beach, and surrounding seaside community, has a unique character. Located just minutes from downtown is Mission Bay, whose calm waters are great for kayaking, sailing and stand-up paddleboarding almost any time of year, while funky surf shops, beach bars, cafes and nightclubs attract those in search of a party. It's also the home of iconic Belmont Park, featuring the historic Gian Dipper rollercoaster. Nearby Ocean Beach features a quirky collection of antique and vintage stores, bars, restaurants and artist studios.

Situated just across the bay from downtown San Diego is Coronado, with gentle surf, sparkling wide-sand beaches, a charming main street and great hotels, including the famous Hotel del Coronado, this island paradise is perfect for a family holiday or romantic getaway. The coastal gem of La Jolla bustles with beachgoers, savvy shoppers and diners relishing oceanfront views. Swimmers, snorkellers, scuba divers, kayakers and surfers can enjoy the golden sands of La Jolla Shores, the Cove and Windansea, and be sure to keep an eye out for migrating whales off the coast as they travel to and from Baja California.

San Diego's thriving urban centre offers an abundance of options for accommodations, activities, dining and cultural attractions. In the historic Gaslamp Quarter, where modern architecture and Victorian-era buildings stand side-by-side, you'll find eclectic galleries, chic boutiques, trendy nightlclubs, rooftop bars, gastropubs, craft beer haunts and fine dining restaurants lining the streets.

As the site where the first Europeans set foot on the US west coast, San Diego oozes history and culture. Old Town State Park features 17 museums and historical site where you can learn about the first settlements. History buffs will not want to miss a trip to the Cabrillo National Monument, where you'll also enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and San Diego's dramatic skyline. San Diego's Spanish heritage is nowhere more firmly rooted than in its dramatically beautiful missions and include Junipero Serra Museum, which showcases California's first mission, the Presidio. Further north is the Mission Basilica San Diego de Alcala and in the community of Oceanside, you'll find Mission San Luis Rey de Francia.

Recently rated in the top 10 parks in the USA, Balboa Park is a must-see. The park is home to 15 major museums, several performing arts venues, lovely gardens and many other attractions, including San Diego Zoo. Itself a city icon for just over a century, San Diego Zoo features more than 4,000 animals from around the world exhibited in the most natural way possible.

Within an easy drive you'll discover San Diego Zoo Safari Park for an up-close encounter with wild nature; Legoland California, a 128-acre theme park featuring more than 60 interactive attractions, shows and rides; Aquatica San Diego for a splash-filled day of water fun; and USS Midway Museum, San Diego's maritime treasure.

Whether you are window shopping, picking out souvenirs or treating yourself, the abundance of shopping choices that San Diego offers won't disappoint. There are many shopping malls, from luxury to family friendly – we particularly love Fashion Valley. Those in search of a bargain on designer and brand names should visit either Carlsbad Premium Outlets or Las Americas Premium Outlets. There's also a variety of shopping neighbourhoods throughout the city with unique boutiques, antique stores, art and more, including Coronado, Little Italy and La Jolla.
