Yellowstone National Park Holidays
America's first national park is home to an incomparable combination of natural beauty, rugged wilderness, majestic peaks and abundant wildlife, as well as the world's largest concentration of geysers and thermal features.
Established in 1872, Yellowstone is one of North America's greatest assets and utterly enthralling. Its two million acres of spectacular wilderness sprawl across the north-west corner of Wyoming spilling into neighbouring Idaho and Montana. The scenery ranges from fascinating geothermal wonders to snaking rivers and sweeping green valleys to thundering waterfalls and vast lakes.
A great way to tour is by driving the Grand Loop, a 142 mile long road that curves around in a figure-of-eight past the park's most striking natural features.
One of the star attractions of Yellowstone is the Old Faithful Geyser, named for the regularity with which it erupted. Today, it tends to erupt around 20 times a day with water soaring up to 180 feet. To see Old Faithful, along with the Giantess Geyser, Beehive Geyser, Castle Geyser and Grand Geyser, follow the two hour boardwalk trail within the Upper Geyser Basin.
In addition Midway Geyser Basin boasts the mighty crater of the Excelsior Geyser and the stunning Grand Prismatic Spring, a must-see attraction with its vivid hues of blue, green, orange and gold.
Other attractions include Mammoth Hot Springs on the east flank of Terrace Mountain; Mount Washburn, which offers various hikes; the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, which resembles Arizona's Grand Canyon; the striking mud pots of Mud Volcano; and the largest high-altitude lake on the continent, Lake Yellowstone.
Yellowstone is also a fabulous place to see wildlife freely roaming in their natural habitat. Animals you might see include grizzly bear, grey wolves, bison, moose and to the south and north east of the park, you can also see herds of wild horses.
