Day 1: Fly to Atlanta. On arrival collect your car and make your way to your hotel.
Day 2 Atlanta/Asheville: Rather than set off straight away, you may wish to visit the World of Coca-Cola or see where Martin Luther King Jr was born. Later, take to the road and head for Asheville in North Carolina (208 miles).
Day 3 Asheville: We recommend a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway where you can stop and soak up the extraordinarily beautiful vistas, or park up and hike one of the many trails. Alternatively, you may wish to visit the impressive Biltmore Estate, home to the Vanderbilts, which with 250 rooms set amidst four acres of grounds, is America’s largest home. In the artsy downtown area of Asheville there are lots of local shops and boutiques along with a tasty selection of restaurants and coffee shops to delve into.
Day 4 Asheville/Charlotte: Head east for North Carolina’s largest city, Charlotte. The Uptown district is the place to find the city’s most popular museums including Discovery Place along with some great restaurants. Another option is to make a pit stop at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, a shrine to the history and heritage of stock car racing (130 miles).
Day 5 Charlotte/Myrtle Beach: Leave the big city behind and bear south towards the coast. Options for breaking your journey include Wadesboro, which has a burgeoning arts community and vibrant business district, or charming Latta which is known for its numerous Victorian style homes (175 miles).
Day 6 Myrtle Beach: A full day to sit back and enjoy the 60 miles of coastline with its white sands and sparkling ocean, with an array of watersports sure to please adventurous types. You can also take in the view from the SkyWheel, visit Ripley’s Aquarium or maybe play a round at one of the many golf courses in the area. There are also plenty of options if you need some retail therapy and you definitely won’t go hungry with a superb array of eateries.
Day 7 Myrtle Beach/Charleston: Follow the coast further south to the historic city of Charleston, which has curb appeal galore thanks to its impressive veranda-fronted mansions and atmospheric streets (96 miles).
Day 8 Charleston: You may like to tour the city by horse-drawn carriage or simply amble through the French Quarter and then head for the City Market, which serves as a hub for shopping, sampling and socialising. Art lovers can browse galleries throughout the city while foodies can indulge in authentic Southern fare.
Day 9 Charleston/Savannah: Drive onwards into Georgia for Savannah, the oldest city in the state and the location of one of the largest National Historic Landmark districts in the USA (150 miles).
Day 10 Savannah: Explore this beguiling city which brims with Old World glamour and romance, antebellum mansions and magnolia trees, horse-drawn carriages and ships sailing up the river. Don’t miss the 24 historic squares including Johnson Square and Reynolds Square, while River Street is a great place to idle away a few hours with its numerous restaurants, shops and galleries.
Day 11 Savannah/Macon: Drive west to Macon, a city jam-packed with culture, history, incredible architecture, stunning Southern charm and a soulful musical heritage. (166 miles).
Day 12 Macon/Atlanta: Your tour concludes as you return your car at Atlanta airport for your onward journey (84 miles).
