Houston & Gulf Coast Holidays
Houston is arguably Texas's most cosmopolitan city with visitors attracted to its world-class arts, top-notch museums and galleries, professional sports and stylish dining scene, while the Gulf Coast region offers 600 miles of sparkling coastline, quaint seaside towns, incredible views and enticing soft sand beaches.
Houston, which is America's fourth largest city, is a cultural mecca with an internationally renowned theatre district and outstanding museums. If time is short, concentrate on the 19 institutions of the pedestrian-friendly Museum District, which include the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Menil Collection, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston Zoo and the Children's Museum of Houston. High on the list of must-sees is NASA's Lyndon B Johnson Space Centre and Mission Control, just 30 minutes drive from the heart of Houston. With more than 400 space artefacts there's no better place to discover the exciting future and remarkable past of America's human spaceflight programme.
World-class shopping is the order of the day at the massive Galleria Mall, as well as Uptown Park and Rice Village or, if you're a sports fan Houston is home to professional teams in football, basketball, baseball, soccer and hockey. Later, head to the impressive Theatre District to catch a live performance, visit nearby Bayou Place which includes cinemas and you'll find no problem grabbing a bite to eat with around 10,000 diverse restaurants throughout the city.
The historic island of Galveston, 50 miles south of Houston, is experiencing a beachside boom, with world-class museums, entertainment and dining options. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, while the 32 miles of soft sand beaches and inviting surf are seemingly endless. To experience Galveston's stunning past, cruise through the beautiful Strand Historic District, tour stately 19th century houses such as the Moody Mansion or Bishop's Palace, or stop by the Galveston Railroad Museum and Texas Seaport Museum. Family fun awaits at the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier which perches over the rolling Gulf of Mexico while at Galveston Island State Park there are hiking and biking trails, beaches and canoes or kayaks to rent.
Located in the South Texas Gulf Coast, Corpus Christi also has miles of beaches and bountiful things to see and do. Head to North Beach or McGee Beach if you want smooth sands and calm waters ideal for swimming, all just steps away from a bevy of restaurants. Surf enthusiasts should head to North Packery Beach and wildlife watchers will enjoy Mustang Island State Park or the Padre Island National Seashore. Once you're done soaking up the sun, there's plenty to keep you busy. A prominent attraction is the USS Lexington, a historic aircraft carrier that served during World War II, there's also the Texas State Aquarium or the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History.
