Hop on a ferry and glide across Elliott Bay for striking mountain views. Head to Pike Place Public Market or soar above the clouds at the Seattle Space Needle.

Day 3 Seattle/Portland: Head to the station and board the Amtrak train for the journey (around 3 hours) to Portland in neighbouring Oregon. On arrival, make your way to your hotel.

Day 4  Portland: Laid-back Portland is a city with a small town feel, filled with charming neighbourhoods and a hip downtown area. It consistently tops the “Greenest Cities in the USA” lists and is also very bike-friendly, so why not hire a bike and pedal along the waterfront. The city is also known for its craft beers and has over 50 breweries, along with a large number of food trucks.

Day 5  Portland/Amtrak Train: Morning at leisure before you return to the train station and board the Coast Starlight for the overnight journey. Your roomette features comfortable seats by day and converts to upper and lower berths by night.

Day 6  Amtrak Train/Sacramento: Arrive Sacramento early this morning and make your way to your hotel. Relax at the hotel or head out to start exploring this buzzing city with its farm-fresh restaurants, farmers markets, home-grown breweries, colourful street murals and gold rush-era attractions.

Day 7  Sacramento: Take your pick from 28 museums, visit the California State Capitol, and spend time at the Old Sacramento Waterfront which bustles with activity and features dozens of restored or recreated gold rush era buildings.

Day 8  Sacramento/San Francisco: Continue sightseeing before making your way to the station for the train south to San Francisco, which takes around 2 hours. On arrival make your way to your hotel.

Day 9  San Francisco: Sightseeing options are seemingly endless in this great city. Perhaps hire a bike and ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, hop on a cable car and trundle through the city, visit Fisherman’s Wharf, bustling Union Square or Chinatown, or perhaps head across the water to Alcatraz.

Day 10  San Francisco/San Luis Obispo: Bid farewell to this enchanting city and board your next train for the five hour journey to San Luis Obispo. On arrival make your way to your hotel.

Day 11  San Luis Obispo: No place is perfect, but San Luis Obispo is pretty close. This vibrant city has gorgeous open spaces for hiking and mountain biking, great wine and history aplenty. In the exciting downtown you’ll find historic buildings from Spanish colonial to Victorian, including the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. The city is definitely a culinary destination with an eclectic dining scene, amazing craft beers and acclaimed wines.

Day 12  San Luis Obispo/Los Angeles: Return to the station and board your final train, which will take you to Los Angeles in around five hours. On arrival make your way to your hotel.

Days 13-14  Los Angeles: Two full days to fit in as many sights as you can. See the movie star hand and footprints on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, join the A-listers in Beverly Hills, spend a day at Universal Studios Hollywood or, make a beeline for the broad beach, lively pier and great shopping in Santa Monica.

Day 15  Los Angeles: All too soon, this fabulous holiday comes to an end as you make your way to the airport for your onward journey.
