This afternoon, visit the Road to Tara Museum and Stately Oaks Plantation which was the inspiration for the book. See memorabilia from the film including costumes worn by the stars Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. In the evening, enjoy a welcome reception which will give you the chance to meet your fellow travellers.
Day 3 Atlanta/Charleston: Head west to Augusta, the second oldest city in Georgia and home to the prestigious Masters golf tournament. Arrive in Charleston late this afternoon. The evening is free for you to explore or enjoy a leisurely dinner.
Day 4 Charleston: Begin with a locally guided tour of Charleston before an afternoon at leisure. Take some time to walk the streets of Charleston's meticulously preserved historic district. Natural disasters, the Revolutionary War and the Civil War all took its toll on this beautiful city, yet it stands out as an historic gem of the South. Alternatively, you may wish to take an optional excursion to historic Boone Hall Plantation with its famous Avenue of the Oaks. The property has appeared in numerous films, including "North and South" (additional expense).
Day 5 Charleston/Savannah: Travel further south to Savannah, stopping en route on Port Royal Island and Beaufort. Afternoon arrival in Savannah, once the world's largest cotton port. The Civil War destroyed much of Georgia, but Savvanah was spared, so numerous buildings around the tree-shaded squares are hundreds of years old. Many of the buildings are very well preserved and some are open to the public. Enjoy an historic old town trolley tour to learn more about the fascinating history of the antebellum residences.
Day 6 Savannah/Tallahassee: Drive south along the coast passing cites rich in history and charm. In the afternoon you will enter Florida, stopping in the charming city of St Augustine, which was founded in 1565 by Spanish explorers. It is the oldest continuously occupied European established city and port within the continental USA. Continue to Tallahassee, one of the country's smaller, quieter capitals with oak lined streets and soft hills surrounding the city.
Day 7 Tallahassee/New Orleans: Travel along Florida's panhandle to Pensacola, known for its miles of Gulf shoreline. Next up is Mobile, Alabama, one of the most important ports along the Gulf Coast. Arrive New Orleans in the evening, where you are free to set out and explore. There is also an option to join a Riverboat Dinner Cruise (additional expense).
Day 8 New Orleans: Explore this wonderful city at leisure. Take a stroll around the atmospheric French Quarter where trademark wrought iron balconies overlook the narrow cobblestone streets and the sounds of jazz are never far away.
Day 9 New Orleans/Natchez: Travel to Baton Rouge for a brief city tour. Continue via the historic Natchez Trace Parkway to Natchez, the oldest European settlement on the Mississippi. Visit an antebellum home and learn about the wealthy 19th century millionaire owners.
Day 10 Natchez/Memphis: Head to Memphis, a large river port known as the "Home of the Blues". A brief city tour includes Beale Street. Later, you may wish to take an optional tour to Graceland (additional cost).
Day 11 Memphis/Nashville: Continue to the Country Music capital of Nashville. Attractions include the Grand Ole Opry, Ryman Auditorium and studios near Music Row.
Day 12 Nashville/Atlanta: Head to Chattanooga, home to the famous "Choo Choo", and which has received national recognition for the renaissance of its beautiful downtown and redeveloped riverfront. This afternoon, continue to Atlanta where your tour concludes.
