It takes approximately 8 hours to navigate the 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, allowing you ample time to fully appreciate one of the 20th century’s engineering marvels.
Day 8 Fuerte Amador, Panama: Situated at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal, Fuerte Amador is a man-made peninsula extending out into the Pacific Ocean. Options here include a cruise on Gatun Lake, an aerial tram ride within Soberania National Park or a ride on the world’s first transcontinental railway, the Panama Canal Railway, a route built during the California gold rush.

Day 10 Puntarenas, Costa Rica: Puntarenas is your gateway to Costa Rica’s wonders and to its capital, San Jose. On both coasts, tropical rainforests rise to the mountains of the interior, while in the west a succession of brown-sand beaches form the nation’s Pacific Coast.

Day 13 Huatulco, Mexico: This tropical Eden offers crystalline waters, coral reefs and uncrowded beaches. Inland, the rugged coast range is thickly carpeted with rainforest and coffee plantations. Day 14 At sea: If lazing poolside isn’t your thing, try out the sports court for a game of volleyball or basketball.
Day 15 Puerto Vallarta, Mexico: This once sleepy town has been transformed into an international resort, with travellers drawn by its climate, excellent shopping and miles of palm-lined beaches. Take a stroll along the Malecon boardwalk, take a boat to the secluded Las Caletas cove, discover how tequila is made at Tequila Hacienda or perhaps snorkel around Isla Marietas.
