Day 1: Fly to Lerwick and on arrival make your way to your hotel. If time allows set out to explore this harbour town.
Days 2-4 Lerwick, Shetland: The Shetland capital boasts a number of must-see sights including the fascinating Shetland Museum and Archives, which brings to life the story of this archipelago. Elsewhere on Mainland, attractions include the Shetland Crofthouse Museum for an insight into a traditional way of life which has long vanished; the ancient settlement of Jarlshof on Sumburgh Head; St Ninian’s Isle with its glorious white sands; the impressive Iron Age Mousa Broch; the Scalloway Museum to learn about the Shetland Bus, the name given to a covert wartime operation; the haunting ruins of Scalloway Castle; Hillswick, which is home to a small wildlife sanctuary for seals and otters; and the picturesque circular walking route that leads from Eshaness Lighthouse. If time allows, take the ferry to the island of Yell and then onwards to Unst to uncover remnants of the Vikings, see incredible geology and admire the island’s natural heritage.
Day 5 Lerwick, Shetland/Kirkwall, Orkney: Make your way to the airport for the short 30 minute flight to Orkney.
On arrival make your way to your hotel before maybe visiting St Magnus Cathedral, a magnificent building dominatings the skyline; while nearby are the remains of Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces.
Days 6-7 Kirkwall, Orkney: Highlights include the pretty town of Stromness and its museum to learn about Orkney’s natural and maritime history; Skara Brae, one of the most remarkable prehistoric sites in the world; the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will discover a whole host of archaeological treasures; the nearby Isle of Hoy which is known for its spectacular coastal scenery and dramatic sea stack, the Old Man of Hoy; and Scapa Flow Visitor Centre & Museum to discover the major role Orkney played during both World Wars.
Day 8 Kirkwall/mainland UK: Return to the airport for your onward flight to mainland UK.
