Set in the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man is a unique destination with over 10,000 years of history. Its most famous symbols are the Manx cat and the island's emblem, the three legs of Man whose meaning is "whichever way you throw me I stand". The ancient Celts, Vikings and Christians left the island with a legacy of their lifetime and all around the island you will find evidence of these early settlers - Celtic crosses, medieval fortresses and Viking burial grounds.

Blessed with an extensive coastline, outstanding natural landscapes, plenty of sandy beaches and a more relaxed way of life, the Isle of Man has a wealth of things to see and do and places to visit. This sea-bound kingdom is fiercely proud of its diverse culture and fascinating heritage and everywhere you go there are reminders of the island's rich Celtic and Viking past.

Whilst Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man, is most people's starting point for sightseeing, the island-wide scenery should not be missed. And there are many ways to get around the island, including the steam and electric railways or horse drawn trams which "clip clop" along the two miles of Douglas promenade and are a fascinating reminder of days gone by.

If you are a walker, then an Isle of Man holiday won't disappoint. With 17 national glens, all with no admission charge, and a network of footpaths, the walker, rambler or even just the stroller can enjoy discovering the beauty of Man.

There are numerous vantage points around the island to watch a variety of birds and if marine life appeals to you, make sure you visit the Sound at the island's southern tip where seals are often spotted. There's a wide range of outdoor pursuits including cycling, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, coasteering, kayaking and golf to name but a few. Whatever your interests the contrasts and character of the Isle of Man make it a perfect choice for a short break or holiday.
