Regarded as the most exciting city in the world, a trip to New York is the experience of a lifetime. A global centre of entertainment, fashion, media and finance where world-class museums and unforgettable icons like the Statue of Liberty beckon, New York pulses with an irrepressible energy. Equally rewarding are the colourful neighbourhoods, historic streets, trendy bars and astonishing array of eateries which all add to the urban buzz.

Where better to take in the grandeur of the Big Apple than from an observation deck, be it the Empire State Building, Top of the Rock or One World Trade Centre. The iconic Empire State building, in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, has breathtaking views from its open-air observatory, and is open until 2am every day; Top of the Rock, at the Rockefeller Centre, actually has three observation decks and all perfectly showcase the City's spectacular skyline; three levels of views are also found at the One World Observatory, at the top of One World Trade Centre, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Alternatively, book a helicopter tour for a real bird's eye view of New York.

If you prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground, take a stroll across the Brooklyn Bridge, an American landmark which stretches over the East River connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn. The walk takes about 40 minutes and delivers exhilarating views. If you want a close-up view of New York's most familiar landmark, the Statue of Liberty, you'll need to hop on one of the ferries that run from Battery in Lower Manhattan to Liberty Island. Visitors can view the museum and climb the stairs to a balcony located at the top of the statue's pedestal, but if you want access to the crown, you must reserve tickets in advance – usually about two months before you wish to visit. Continue your ferry journey to Ellis Island and visit the museum which tells the story of immigration from the colonial era to the present day.

The city's countless other attractions include Central Park, the world's most famous urban park, which contains world-class museums and hosts countless activities and concerts, especially in the summer; Radio City Music Hall, a 1932 art deco theatre offering musical extravaganzas and films as well as guided tours; and Carnegie Hall, New York's first great concert hall. Further cultural offerings can be found on the Upper East Side stretch of Fifth Avenue, known as the Museum Mile it takes in The Met, the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum and a handful of others. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is on the site of the former World Trade Centre and pays a moving tribute to those who lost their lives.

The bright lights and giant billboards of Times Square are another must-see. Big, bright and unforgettable, Times Square is a great place to people-watch, shop and eat. There's also a TKTS discount booth here, which offers up to 50% discount for tickets to many of the Broadway shows. No visit to New York is complete without experiencing a show on Broadway, be it a musical, long-running hit or fascinating drama.

Whatever your retail pleasure, you'll find it in New York. Where better to begin than Fifth Avenue, regarded as the city's premier shopping area, it's home to many flagship stores including Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor and Saks 5th Avenue. The 34th Street Shopping District has over 175 department stores, shops and boutiques including Macy's, while Soho Shopping District is where you'll find Bloomingdale's; the Greenwich Village Shopping District houses one-of-a-kind shops amongst the mainstream retail names; while South Street Seaport is an historic spot with shopping, dining and entertainment.

New York is also rightfully known for its restaurants and nightlife, whether that means sophisticated cocktail bars, dance clubs, taverns, a trendsetting restaurant, classic steakhouse, pizzeria or a bagel bakery, your choices are as limitless as your cravings.
