Top of the must-do list is to ride the cable car to the summit of majestic Table Mountain, visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela and many other political activists were imprisoned, admire the historic Bo-Kaap enclave with its vividly painted houses and the bustling Victoria and Alfred (V&A) Waterfront. No trip to Cape Town is complete without spending a day exploring the spectacular Cape Peninsula and its dramatic coastline. It’s a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts where you can get up close and personal with fascinating wildlife, including penguins at Boulders Beach.
3 nights – Rovos Rail (Cape Town to Pretoria)Journey from Cape Town to Pretoria in total luxury on Rovos Rail, established in 1989 with an international reputation for its truly world-class travel experiences. Depart from Pretoria and travel south across the gold fields of Witwatersrand and the broad grasslands of the Highveld. On day two, stop in Kimberley, tour Kimberley’s Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole (the world’s largest man-made excavation), before returning to the train for dinner. Next, disembark at Matjiesfontein where you have time to explore and can visit the impressive museum on the platform. Finally, travel through the Hex River Valley before this amazing journey concludes with arrival in Cape Town.
1 night – PretoriaThe relaxed capital city of Pretoria has a rich heritage with stately buildings and good museums within pretty jacaranda-lined streets. Top sights include the imposing Union Buildings, a crescent-shaped complex where thousands gathered in 1994 to see Nelson Mandela inaugurated as South African president. Other city sights include the lovely Pretoria National Botanic Gardens, Freedom Park and the nearby Voortrekker Monument, which commemorates the epic exodus of Boers from the Cape into the interior.
3 nights - Pilanesberg National ParkPicturesque Pilanesberg National Park, the fourth largest park in South Africa, lies between the Kalahari and the Lowveld regions and promises thrilling game viewing including the Big Five, all in a malaria-free environment. Set in the crater of a long extinct volcano, this dramatic landscape and its unique ecological richness is home to over 7,000 animals and 360 bird species.
