Yala National Park

Yala National Park

Yala National Park, located in Sri Lanka’s dry zone on the south east and hugging the panoramic Indian Ocean, was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and became a national park in 1938. The park is divided into five sectors, of which two are currently open to visitors on guided 4x4 jeep safaris which give the opportunity to view wildlife.

Yala's terrain is very diverse ranging from dense jungle to grasslands, lakes, wetlands, flat plains, rocky outcrops and sandy beaches (although these are not recommended for swimming).

Colombo

Colombo

More often than not Sri Lanka's capital is considered as nothing more than a transit point, however those that do allow a day or so to explore Colombo will be pleasantly surprised to find a dynamic city that pulses with life whilst preserving an old world charm – indeed many of the boutique colonial homes have been restored as hotels.

Within this urban hub, which is located on the island's west coast, you will find everything from colonial buildings and historical monuments to temples and museums along with exciting shopping, delectable dining and a vibrant nightlife.

The British influence is clearly visible in the buildings located in the Fort, an area where the larger corporations and stock exchange are situated, as well as the official residence of Sri Lanka's President. Close by is Pettah Market, a bustling maze of stalls with each section selling its own speciality, ranging from foodstuffs to shoes and even gold.

South West Coast Beaches

South West Coast Beaches

This scenic coastline shows Sri Lanka at its most developed with the established resort of Bentota along with the bustling town of Kalutara, both of which are dotted with wonderful hotels and dining options, while those who enjoy a more serene pace of life, should look no further than the small resort of Ahungalla. However, what they all share are golden beaches, swaying coconut palms and the warm blue waters of the Indian Ocean.

Nestled between the beautiful Bentota River, a tropical lagoon and the Indian Ocean is Bentota, one of the south west coast's most established beach resorts.
