Over the last half century Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, has evolved from a simple fishing village to a luxurious metropolis dotted with glittering architecture, sumptuous hotels, high-end restaurants and vast shopping malls, which combine wonderfully with untouched desert and expansive sandy beaches.
Discover more about Abu Dhabi's religion and traditions with a visit to one of the world's most impressive landmarks, the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This architectural marvel features 80 domes, over 1,000 columns, gold-plated chandeliers and the world's largest hand woven carpet. Don't miss Al Ain, located 90 minutes drive from the city, it is one of the world's oldest permanently inhabited settlements and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Winding five miles along the Arabian Gulf shore, Abu Dhabi's Corniche is a beautiful boulevard of paved walkways, separate cycle paths, gorgeous manicured gardens, luxury hotels, children's play areas, an array of cafes and restaurants and not forgetting the sweeping sandy beach.
Nearly 200 low-lying islands grace Abu Dhabi's extensive coastline, some of which are accessible to visitors including Yas Island, Sir Bani Yas Island and Saadiyat Island. An emerging entertainment destination, Yas Island is home to the state-of-the-art Yas Marina Circuit where the annual F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is held. It's fast and furious for all ages at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the world's first Ferrari theme park and the largest attraction of its kind, while Yas Waterworld is a futuristic waterpark with 43 rides, slides and attractions. Don't miss also the newly opened Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, the world's first ever Warner Bros. branded indoor theme park, with 29 exhilarating rides, interactive attractions and live entertainment. There's also Yas Links Abu Dhabi, an award-winning golf course and Yas Beach, which is set on the island's tranquil southern shores.
Sir Bini Yas Island is alive with wildlife and adventure activities, a five star boutique hotel and historical sites. More than half the island is made up of the Arabian Wildlife park, one of the region's largest wildlife reserves and home to more than 10,000 free roaming animals including Arabian Oryx, gazelles, giraffes, hyenas and cheetahs. Saadiyat Island is undergoing remarkable transformation into a world-class leisure, residential and cultural hub of global proportions, housing the world's largest single concentration of premier cultural assets, including the Zayed National Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (under construction). Also on the island is Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, a Gary Player-designed masterpiece and the region's first ocean course.
For those who love to shop, Abu Dhabi won't disappoint. It's so diverse, there's everything from ultra-modern malls with the latest brands to small, souk like outlets where you can buy traditional handicrafts, spices and carpets. Yas Mall is Abu Dhabi's biggest shopping centre with nearly 400 stores and 60 restaurants and cafes as well as a 20 screen cinema. Other options include the Abu Dhabi Mall, Marina Mall and Khalidiyah Mall. Abu Dhabi's bustling souks are worth a visit for their vibrant atmosphere and eclectic variety of goods. Some of our favourite souks include the Fish Souk for a fascinating insight into the way traditional business is done, Al Mina Fruit & Vegetable Souk which bursts with colour, the Al Ain Souk is a great place to explore and practice your bargaining skills, and Souk Al Zafarana which reflects true Emirati culture and tradition.
Sports enthusiasts will find a variety of activities in Abu Dhabi including golf, horse riding, cycling, dune driving in the desert and watersports such as sailing, kayaking, wakeboarding, snorkelling and diving. For those who prefer to watch rather than do, Abu Dhabi also has an action-packed calendar, which includes a Formula 1 Grand Prix and a European Tour golf tournament. There are also a variety of international art, music, heritage and cultural festivals which take place annually.
