One bedroom garden villa with breakfast

Set amid cool mountains and spectacular terraced rice paddies beside the Ayung River, this seductive town is Bali’s cultural hub and spiritual capital.

The flourishing arts and crafts scene dates back to the 1930s when eminent European painters, writers and musicians were drawn here by panoramas of vibrant rice fields, ancient temples, verdant forests and dramatic river gorges. Today, you can stroll around numerous galleries, museums, workshops and craft markets.

Temple festivals and ceremonies occur almost daily so you may well chance upon one. For those not lucky enough to view an authentic ceremony, traditional Balinese dances are performed nightly at nearby Bona village.

The sacred Monkey Forest nature reserve and temple complex is a popular visitor attraction. As the name suggests the towering forest is home to hundreds of cheeky long-tailed macaques who, locals believe, protect the area from evil spirits.

Ubud is highly regarded as a centre of well-being with spas, yoga and meditation all on offer or, should you feel creative, why not visit a Balinese cooking class. Eating out in Ubud is a real pleasure too and with over 300 restaurants there’s no shortage of choice, be it fine dining venues or local delicacies at bustling market stalls.

Village bungalow with breakfast

Located on the eastern side of the island's isthmus, this former fishing village is Bali's most established resort yet has retained much of its character and is quiet with a wonderfully relaxed coastal ambience.

The golden sandy beach gently slopes into crystal waters and is fringed by a band of shady palms and hotels. The waters are protected by a long string of offshore reefs, creating large, shallow lagoons that are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and a whole array of watersports including kitesurfing and stand up paddleboarding. Sanur is also the launchpad for visitors wishing to dive and explore the splendours of the nearby island of Nusa Lembongan.

Sanur's beachfront esplanade curves for over two miles past resorts, beachfront cafes and wooden fishing boats under repair, as well as a few elegant old villas built by wealthy expats. It's the perfect place for a lazy stroll or bicycle ride as there are numerous places offering bike hire. The town itself also boasts a range of tourist shops, markets, cafes, restaurants and bars, particularly along the main street, Jalan Danau Tamblingan.

For those seeking a brief escape from the beach, just 10 minutes from Sanur is a hidden oasis called the Mangrove Information Centre. There are two trails to follow along wooden boardwalks, both of which give you a good view of the mangroves and wildlife that inhabits the forest.
