Historic St Peter Port nestles against a hillside sweeping down to one of the world's most beautiful harbours, bursting with yachts and fishing boats. The town's collection of narrow lanes and alleyways lead uphill from the sea to a skyline of church steeples and red-painted roof tops, while fine Georgian facades line the quaint cobbled High Street.
Medieval Castle Cornet has stood guard over the town for 800 years and provides a spectacular backdrop to the town. Much of the original architecture remains intact and museums inside cover the maritime and military history, while at midday, two redcoats fire a one-gun salute from the castle's Royal Battery. Hauteville House, where 19th century French writer Victor Hugo spent 15 years in exile may also appeal. His former house has been preserved as a museum which captures the writer's eccentric life with its amazing collection of furniture and artefacts. At the southern end of St Peter Port is La Vallette Underground Military Museum, which covers Guernsey's military history; while nearby is Guernsey Aquarium and La Vallette Bathing Pools, which have been in existence for more than 150 years. At the top of town is Candie Gardens, once the formal gardens of a private home they are now open for the public to enjoy and feature one of the British Isles' oldest known heated glass-houses. The gardens also house the Guernsey Museum & Art Gallery, which houses a permanent exhibition of the story of Guernsey and temporary exhibitions of art that change throughout the year. Within walking distance of the town centre, you will find Bluebell Woods, a wonderful place to walk at any time of year with footpaths leading onto cliff paths and wonderful views from the south east of the island. In spring time, the woods are aptly named as the floor becomes a carpet of blue flowers beneath the budding tree canopy. Beau Sejour Leisure Centre has something to offer everyone, young or old, including an indoor pool, separate children's pool, gym, sauna, steam room, tennis and badminton courts. The High Street has retained much of its charm with small boutiques and gift shops jostling for space alongside familiar branded stores. Each week the Fresh Friday Market brings Market Square to life bringing local suppliers to the town from across the island. The capital also has a huge choice of restaurants with an international flavour along with lively pubs and bars to soak up the atmosphere. During October and November, a popular food festival, Tennerfest, takes place. Hundreds of eateries all put on special menus starting from as little as 10.00 GBP.
