Located on southern Thailand's east coast, Krabi is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Awaiting you at this perfect escape are white sand beaches, soaring cliffs, a colourful marine life amid the abundance of coral reefs and an unhurried pace of life which is sure to restore your soul.
Krabi's myriad of bays and coves has some of Thailand's least commercialised beaches, where tropical mangroves flank soft white sands and the crystal clear azure waters are a diver's paradise. Popular Ao Nang has a large bay with scenic beaches and a variety of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops aimed towards the tourists. 15 minutes north of Ao Nang are the powdery sands of Klong Muang where the well-established village has a few shops and simple restaurants. Accessible only by boat, stunning Phra Nang has a pristine beach and sparkling waters with numerous limestone karsts.
The scenic splendour of Krabi is hard to ignore with incredible natural sights seemingly at every turn. Head inland to Khao Phanom Bencha National Park where the main attraction is Nam Tok Huay To, a spectacular 11-tier waterfall with numerous pools for swimming. Alternatively, you could opt to follow one of the many hiking trails that lead into the heart of the forest, keeping your eyes peeled for monkeys.
Rock climbers of all abilities have long been lured to the spectacular limestone crags of Krabi, particularly around the beautiful peninsulas of Railay or Tonsai, while the exotic fish and colourful coral below the waves also tempt snorkellers and divers. Countless uninhabited offshore islands or the nearby Phi Phi Islands are also within easy reach by longtail speedboat.
Krabi Town is the charming provincial capital, where you can while away a few hours in the cosy cafes of the hilly streets, or follow the riverside walkway down to the fishing port, where restaurants specialise in seafood. In Ao Nang restaurants serve a variety of cuisines including Thai, international and of course seafood, while nightlife in Krabi tends to revolve around the open-air bars and restaurants rather than clubs and discos. Krabi Town and Ao Nang offer the best shopping opportunities and include specialist shops, department stores and markets piled high with fresh produce or handicrafts and souvenirs.
