With shimmering glaciers, abundant wildlife, crystalline lakes, thundering waterfalls, deep canyons and evergreen forest all surrounded by towering peaks, it’s little wonder Jasper National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At 4,335 square miles it is also Canada’s largest park in the Rocky Mountains and the second largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world.

The laid-back town of Jasper is your springboard to the park’s outdoor pursuits and attractions. Adventurers can fill their boots with alpine day hikes, adrenalin pumping mountain biking, great paddling, climbing and canyoning. Those who prefer a more relaxed pace can take in the many scenic drives, picnic amongst majestic mountains and enjoy watching wildlife such as caribou, elk, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, bears, wolves and a variety of birds. For an aerial perspective, ride the Jasper Skytram. It takes seven minutes to reach the high Upper Station where the jaw-dropping views include six mountain ranges.

Additional attractions include Miette Hot Springs, which are the hottest springs in the Rockies; stunning Maligne Lake whose baby-blue water and circle of photogenic peaks are a feast for the eyes; and the steep, narrow gorge of Maligne Canyon. Also not to be missed is the Columbia Icefield where you can hop aboard an Ice Explorer onto the Athabasca Glacier or step out onto the amazing Glacier Skywalk.

After a day in the wild, there are friendly pubs and charming cafés where you can dine alfresco in front of a vista as drool-worthy as the food on your plate.

1 nts Lake Louise Inn, Lake Louise

Standard Room, Room only

While many famous locations don’t live up to the hype, Lake Louise certainly does. Its vibrant emerald-green water, soaring mountain backdrop, glistening glacier and palatial hotel are simply picture-perfect, whatever the season.

By far the best way to immerse yourself in the spectacular landscape is to step out on a hike and Lake Louise has year-round trails for all ability levels, from a simple short stroll to a rigorous mountaintop trek. Alternatively, hire a bike and take the family for a spin along the lake, or climb as many hills as your legs can manage and pedal amongst towering peaks. When snow covers the trails and roads you can try fat biking, a great fun option. During winter, choose from ice skating on the frozen lake to cross-country skiing, dog sledding and more.

A summertime must do is to hire a canoe from the Lake Louise boathouse and paddle across the lake towards the Victoria Glacier. For a bird’s eye view, climb aboard the Lake Louise Gondola which crawls up the side of Whitehorn Mountain to a dizzying viewpoint above the valley floor.

South of Lake Louise is Moraine Lake, whose waters are the most amazing colour, a vivid shade of turquoise that changes in intensity through the summer as the glaciers melt. Sit lakeside and absorb the surrounding mountains, waterfalls and rock piles, a scene so stunning it almost seems unreal.

The hamlet of Lake Louise itself has a small selection of shops and a variety of accommodation and restaurant options, many of which practise a farm-to-table ethos.
