Escape the fast pace of city life for the province of Kanchanaburi, 150 miles west of Bangkok, for emotive history tropical scenery and soft adventures.

Kanchanaburi is famed for its World War II landmarks - the Bridge over the River Kwai and the Death Railway, which was forcibly built by Allied prisoners and Asian labourers. Although partially destroyed from bombing in 1945, the black iron bridge was rebuilt and is a poignant reminder of WW2 atrocities. Today, the Death Railway is one of the world's most scenic rail routes with tracks enclosed by verdant forests, opening out onto a sheer cliff and running alongside the River Kwai.

The excellent Thailand-Burma Railway Centre highlights the POW'S plight, whilst the immaculately kept cemetery, the final resting place of over 10,000 prisoners of war, provides a quiet reflective sanctuary.

Follow the memorial trail into Hellfire Pass through spectacular countryside to the original rail bed. Prisoners working on this infamous cutting endured brutal conditions and the on-site Memorial Museum tells their story.

History aside, the province boasts a magnificent landscape of dense jungles, rivers and cascading waterfalls. Bamboo rafting, trekking and cycling are all popular activities for those not content to sit and soak up the riverside peace and beauty.

5 nts Dusit Thani Hua Hin, Hua Hin, Cha Am & Kui Buri

Deluxe room with breakfast

Equally popular with young couples and families, tourists and Thais (including the royal family), Hua Hin’s three miles of attractive powdery sands are flanked by good value hotels, luxury resorts and world-renowned spas. After dark, enjoy some friendly bartering at the vibrant night market, be tempted by the countless food stalls and retreat to a sophisticated wine bar or casual music venue.

While Cha Am may not rival Hua Hin for facilities, it has a long casuarina-lined beach, calm turquoise waters, a laid-back air and is highly regarded for its succulent seafood.

Kui Buri is half an hour’s drive south of Hua Hin and is a peaceful, underdeveloped area home to numerous fishing villages and a gorgeous stretch of virgin beachfront. Within an hour's drive of the resort is the little-visited Kui Buri National Park, which protects around 300 wild elephants - the largest concentration in Thailand.

Away from the beach, attractions include a hilltop Buddhist temple, royal palaces, Pala-U Waterfall and Sam Roi Yot National Park, while for sports enthusiasts, the region is regarded as one of Thailand’s finest golfing locations. There’s also the little-visited Kui Buri National Park, which protects around 300 wild elephants - the largest concentration in Thailand.
