Situated 18 miles off Malaysia’s north west coast, Langkawi comprises  99 islands, of which only five are inhabited. The main island, Pulau Langkawi is fringed with picture-postcard beaches, while the island’s scenic interior is a peaceful landscape of paddy fields and small villages. Popular Cenang Beach, on the south western corner, has fine sands shelving gently towards the enticing waters; Burau Bay provides an idyllic setting for doing as little as possible; while north coast Datai Bay entices with an exclusive stretch of sands.

One of the island’s top attractions is the Langkawi SkyCab (cable car) and SkyBridge. The exhilarating experience begins with an ascent by cable car over rainforest, lush valleys and rugged cliffs to the summit of Mount Mat Chinchang. Here, aside from breathtaking views, you can take a walk on the SkyBridge, a curved steel suspension bridge that sweeps for a terrifying 400 feet to a neighbouring mountain. Another popular place to visit is Underwater World Langkawi, known for its innovative Tunnel Tank.

Snorkellers and divers can take a trip to the Pulau Payar Marine Park, where the coral reef teems with life, while further natural wonders await you at the remarkable Kilim Geoforest Park, a vast protected mangrove swamp with forests, isolated beaches and blue lagoons.

The tiny capital, Kuah, has a night market and a couple of shopping malls where you can make the most of the island’s duty free status. Kuah and Cenang Beach are where you’ll find the widest choice of restaurants; however, hidden gems are also scattered island-wide.
