Phuket sits on Thailand's west coast and is the country's best known and largest island. Its wide appeal is thanks to a mix of strikingly handsome beaches, majestic mountains and rainforests which intermingle with second to none dining, shopping and entertainment.

Lively Patong is the island's main resort with a long stretch of fine white sand alongside a wide choice of activities, eateries, nightlife and shopping options. South of Patong is slightly quieter Karon, known for its long beach, excellent snorkelling and good selection of shops and eateries; while on the sheltered south east coast is tranquil Panwa Bay.

Just a few minutes south of Karon Beach are the palm-lined white sands and clear waters of Kata Beach. It’s a popular choice for families and those seeking a good selection of restaurants, bars and shops. From May to October, Kata is also popular with surfers who flock here to catch the waves.

Further up the west coast is Bang Tao Bay, a four mile stretch of beach home to some of Phuket's most luxurious resorts, including those within the Laguna Phuket Resort which are clustered around a series of inland lagoons. There is a small shopping mall within the resort, an 18-hole golf course and the nearby village of Cherng Talay has a variety of good value restaurants.

Clearly the palm-fringed beaches are the main attraction, however venture away from the soft sands and you'll find plenty to explore including the recently constructed Big Buddha, Thalang National Museum, Ton Sai Waterfall and ornate Wat Chalong - one of Phuket's most important temples. Take a stroll around Old Phuket Town and you'll discover turn-of-the-century Sino-Portuguese architecture and funky shops while families may enjoy Phuket Aquarium, Cable Jungle Adventure or Phuket FantaSea Show.

Phuket is also the gateway to many smaller islands that are well worth exploring; while a must-see is stunning Phang Nga Bay with its sheer limestone outcrops jutting vertically from the emerald-green water. Choose from a leisurely cruise or perhaps enjoy a closer look by joining a guided sea kayak tour.

The island also offers a great variety of shopping, from bustling open-air food markets, noisy night markets, to boutiques and department stores. Visiting one of the many markets offers a glimpse of local life and popular markets include Phuket Weekend Market in Phuket Town, Banzaan Market in Patong Beach and the Night Market of Old Phuket Town. Karon Shopping Plaza has a wide range of souvenirs and clothing, Plaza Surin offers boutique-style shopping and Premium Outlets Phuket has genuine designer goods at significant discounts.

It really is impossible to go hungry in Phuket as the number and diverse array of restaurants is quite astounding, although the larger resorts do offer more choice particularly when it comes to international cuisines. As you might expect from an island, seafood is a speciality and features widely in restaurants and food stalls all over Phuket.

Located an hour's drive north of Phuket in mainland Phang Nga province, Khao Lak has long, long expanses of sandy beach bordered by the mountains of the surrounding national parks. It's not difficult to understand Khao Lak's appeal when you are greeted by unspoilt landscape of beaches, jungle-clad mountains, forested valleys, mangroves and estuaries. It's a place to take it easy, read a book and get back to nature, albeit with a few comforts!

Khao Lak's pristine beach area spans for some 18 miles from the Thap Lamu pier area in the south towards Bang Sak in the north. Nang Thong is considered the true centre of the Khao Lak area and is where the largest number of resorts and restaurants are found. Bang Niang beach, lying to the north of Nang Thong, is also popular but has a quieter feel, while further north Khuk Khak, Pakarang and Bang Sak areas have some excellent resorts and less crowded beaches.

Resplendent with rich natural attractions Khao Lak borders five spectacular national parks including Lam Ru National Park, a medley of sea cliffs, beaches, forested valleys and mangroves as well as the natural habitat of wildlife such as gibbons, tapirs and Asiatic black bears. Within the parks too there are many waterfalls to explore, including Lampi, Pakweep and Ton Prai, all of which offer refreshing pools for swimming.

Khao Lak is also a convenient departure point for a trip to the Similan Islands, a group of rocks and islands, which can be reached in about an hour by speedboat. The area was declared a national marine park in 1982 and the turquoise waters teem with colourful coral, exotic fish and sea mammals, making it a popular haunt for divers and snorkelers.

Restaurants and nightlife tend to centre around Bang Niang and Nang Thong Beach, and while Khao Lak is definitely not the place to come for those seeking a glitzy party scene, the selection of bars and restaurants give the opportunity to go out and meet fellow holidaymakers. La On is the main shopping, dining and nightlife hub of Nang Thong Beach and the strip of restaurants, bars and shops begin to come alive as the sun begins to set.
