Oahu is home to 80% of Hawaii’s population and appropriately nicknamed ‘the Gathering Place’. It is also where the vast majority of visitors start their Hawaiian holiday. With 112 miles of beaches surrounding the island of Oahu, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Waikiki: This is the centre of the action. A host of hotels make it a bustling, busy and fun beach destination. Don’t come looking for peace and quiet or a romantic beach for two. Waikkiki Beach Walk is the new place to be in Oahu. On an eight acre site on Lewers Street, this new complex offers shops, restaurants and entertainment.

Pearl Harbour: Visit Pearl Harbour where, on December 7th, 1941, America joined the Second World War. Today Pearl Harbour is a National Memorial with boat trips offered to the sunken site of the U.S.S. Arizona.

Iolani Palace: Another worthwhile place to visit is the elaborate home of the island’s former Kings and Queens and America’s only royal palace.

Honolulu: Honolulu is a unique and vibrant blend of museums, art galleries, eclectic dining options, the financial district and Chinatown, where you’ll find some of the city’s coolest nightspots. Honolulu is the best area for shopping, where designer stores are prolific. Clothing and other brand items are usually more expensive than on the mainland, but still generally less than in the UK! Ladies should buy a pareo – you can wear it, sit on it or make it into a bag. Don’t forget to buy Kona coffee and Hawaii’s own Macadamia nuts.

Waimea Falls Park: Located on the North Shore, this offers a quieter pace of life.

Polynesian Cultural Centre: This might be a little commercialised, but it does offers reconstructions of all the major Pacific Islands.

Windward: Less than an hour from Waikiki, the eastern coastline of the island is home to some of America’s best beaches with soft white sand, clear blue waters and a backdrop of lush, green gardens and valleys.
