The facts:

Getting there: Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim) is around is 3 hours 30 minutes drive from Phoenix or about 4 hours drive from Las Vegas. The west rim is about 2 hours 30 minutes drive from Las Vegas.

Best time to travel: The South Rim is available year-round. Summer is particularly popular with warm temperatures and cool nights, but bear in mind if you do follow a trail to the canyon floor, the temperature will vary greatly. The canyon is spectacular in winter, dusted with snow, while spring and autumn offer glorious colour and slightly unpredictable weather, with either late-season snow, rain storms or unseasonably warm weather. The West Rim is also available year-round, with soaring summer temperatures, mild winters and lovely spring or autumn temperatures. The North Rim is usually only accessible from mid-May to October.
